I read the spoilers for the books and some forums, and it seems like the hardcore readers are tired of the author dragging everything out.
All these families are fighting against each other while the zombie army is gathering in the North and the Dragon Queen is getting ready in the south. What exactly is the story moving towards? Will they all unite in the end and use the dragons to wipe out the zombies or will they destroy each other and go to Tyrion to lead them vs the zombies?
at this point everyone is spread all over the world, but per GRRM, they are going to start gravitating towards each other in the coming books.
the actual name of this series is A Song of Fire and Ice, not game of thrones...keep that in mind.
i like this map to get a grasp of what the series are really about. the politicking and backstabbing are a subplot, the real story is a war for the world. and all the scheming is made even more powerful because it wills the audience to turn a blind eye to the real conflict which is about to unleash hell on an unprepared world. the easy parallel is climate change imo
we haven't heard much about asshai yet, so far its just a mystical place where travelling mystics hail from but i expect much more background to be shed over the next two (three?) books
i think what martin did with books four and five was ballsy but in the end quite wise. he was probably tempted to skip all the boring wandering around wartorn westeros, as well as dany's dilemmas as she learns to be a queen, along with a few other subplots. get the dragons across the water to see some action! but the drawing out of the characters' fates builds anticipation and depth even more so than he already had. i'm perfectly willing to wait myself and it seems silly to criticize martin on those grounds. like the point that q/a thing that i think rezz or rufus posted a while back, the man's painting a masterpiece.. there's no rush.

I agree.. I feel that his last 3 books can be as epic as his first 3. Winds of Winter should be filled with shit hitting the fan (if ADWD is to be believed).
Problem lies in Martin's possibly succumbing to his health issues... there is a rush if death is imminent.

Every time I see a pic of him I just want to shout "Dude, eat a salad and walk around the block every now and then!"

Winter may be coming, but so is George R. R. Martin. The author of the "A Song of Ice and Fire" book series on which HBO's popular show "Game of Thrones" is based will cameo in the series' third season, Deadline reports.
"You will see him," executive producer David Benioff told the website, though he wouldn't offer specifics.
The author had a cameo in the series' pilot, but it ended up "on the cutting room floor" when "90 percent of the pilot was re-shot," said another show executive producer, D.B. Weiss. The producers and some show cast appeared with Martin during an Academy of Television Arts and Sciences panel at the Chinese Theater in Hollywood Tuesday night.
Martin will be far from the only writer to appear in his own creation; "Dexter" author Jeff Lindsay appeared as a police officer in the show's third season, and Tony Kushner cameoed as a rabbi in the HBO miniseries adaptation of his "Angels in America" play, just for starters.
Back at the panel, despite the producers keeping tight lips, at least one tease did leak: "There'll be a few people on the throne before (the show) is over," said Martin.
But the audience groaned when Benioff said no order for a fourth season had been made by HBO yet.
