My only issue is because there are so many layers and characters, and also because the characters' names are so unusual to my modern westernized brain, when there's a conversation between two people and they mention Sir so-and-so, I can have trouble recalling exactly who they're referring to. I just pause and google image search for context though.
^^^A common issue for new watchers. I had the same problem my first time through the first couple seasons. I actually started with Season 2 and then went back and watched Season 1 later. I'm not sure if that made it less or more confusing.

The names are so odd and it seems like all of the main characters have the same look with the dark hair and the beards (aside from the Lannister crew).

For some shows that are less interesting, this might be a deal-breaker, but this show is truly worth the investment of time it takes to work everything out. If you go through the first two seasons again, everything will begin falling into place.

The first step is being able to recognize all of the characters and their families. The next step is recognizing where these families are from and getting a firm grasp on all the different places in the story.

The payoff is worth the investment.

Also, I'd recommend checking out Comicbookgirl's YT videos about all of the different families. She basically goes over a lot of the stuff that happened in the books in the lead-up to the timeframe where the show starts.

They will give you the info you need to start separating all of these people/families.

Start here:
EPIC HISTORY: House Lannister: p1/2

I believe she has videos for every family. I'm almost positive there are no spoilers in these things. They're just basically the history of the families to give you perspective.

Yeah, that's an understatement.

These guys will kill babies based on family grudges. Doesn't get much more hardcore than that. You are in for a treat with Season 3.

Game of Thrones started off as a loose, fantasy interpretation of the war of roses

I feel the same with The Wire. I make it a few episodes into season 1 and stop. Just don't care to continue. I must've been spoiled by the high quality of shows like The Sopranos.

Matt Edmondson - Game of Moans ft. Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark)

Didn't really find it funny, but Hodor makes an appearance...

And I doubt that's really her singing.

The Wire is higher quality so this statement doesn't make sense.

Except it's not, particularly when it comes to writing and acting. Maybe it's because The Wire didn't have the charisma of actors like Gandolfini and Imperioli, or the production, directing and writing quality of guys like David Chase, Terence Winter and Tim Van Patten, or the 5 Golden Globe wins. It did have two primetime emmy nominations though. A nice consolation for being unfortunate enough to air alongside an unfairly great, ground-breaking, mammoth of a series like The Sopranos.
