I almost feel like he's a bit ahead of himself, almost too cocky? But it's not even that. I simply can't place it.
Best arm I've seen in a while though. Kid can make some throws! I would love to have him on the 49'ers.... just not with a first round pick (unless they trade back into the late round).
Even though I'm a bit of a Mallett/Arkansas homer, I can't completely disagree with this. I've gotten used to Mallett the last three years so he doesn't bother me anymore. However, I can see how he comes off cocky and rub some people the wrong way.
Like some others, I don't think any QB in this class is worth a top 10 pick. Gabbert, despite putting up very mediocre numbers in the Big 12, came out of nowhere, and somehow worked his way into being a top 5-10 pick. Not to mention he didn't run a very complex offense at Missouri and struggled with any pass more than 10-15 yards down the field. Newton was a one year wonder, has character issues and, like Gabbert played in a pretty simple offense. I just don't understand how either one all of a sudden became worthy of a top 5-10 pick, especially Gabbert. At least Newton won the Heisman and lead his team to a 14-0 record in the SEC and a national championship.
While both Gabbert and Newton have the physical tools to be good NFL QB's neither one accomplished or did enough in college to sell me on them being worth a top 10 pick. Mallett, on top of having a very special and rare arm and having the ability to make every throw, also put up very good numbers for two years against SEC competition in a very complex offense. For some stupid reason Mallett's work ethic has come into question but, like I've already said, you can't have a lazy work ethic for someone like Petrino who is VERY demanding of his QB's and put up the type of numbers Mallett did. Even still, I don't think he's worth a top 10 pick.
