Orlando Magic won't fire Stan Van Gundy, Otis Smith regardless of outcome
Whether the Orlando Magic win or lose their first-round series to the Atlanta Hawks, coach Stan Van Gundy and General Manager Otis Smith both will be coming back next season.
Magic CEO Bob Vander Weide told the Sentinel on Wednesday that he and owner Rich DeVos' family feel comfortable and confident in Van Gundy and Smith.
"We're happy with Otis and Stan," Vander Weide said. "Neither are in jeopardy.
"I've been around now 20 years in the NBA and I've got a good idea of other people's skill-sets are out there, and Stan and Otis are as good a complement as any in the league."

What is this, I don't even. You could make a case for keeping SVG but Otis Smith is an absolutely terrible GM and has ruined any chances this team has of winning a championship for the next 2-3 years at least.

Agreed. Not that SVG doesn't deserve the boot, but you can make a case for keeping him. Otis Smith panicked and pulled the trigger on a trade that 1)Will get them only regular season success(if that) and 2)Ruined any possible future success.

Otis Smith should be fired. His owner/boss lets him spend like crazy and the best he's done the last few years is Rashard Lewis/ Hedo Turkoglu/ Gilbert Arenas. Also Van Gundy insists on living and dying by the three which really isn't a good strategy. Not too mention he's so obsessed with having a stretch four. I'm not saying either should be fired, but they should be on very tight leashes.

with the potential of a lock out, this is the right move. What if there is a shortened season and guys would have to learn a new offense and defense? They would be tragically behind the eight ball. Can't have that in Dwight's potential walk year.
Both Otis and Stan are gone the following year though. Stan has done an admirable job, but his players have tuned him out. That voice and always pissy mood will only get you 2 maybe 3 years max out of guys unless you are winning rings. And Otis should have been fired last year

Not saying that SVG doesn't like the 3 but he was pretty much forced into the stretch four idea. When Rashard was signed, there was no other PF on the roster. The only serviceable big men were D12, Brian Cook and Adonal Foyle. Awesome right? Gortat had yet to come into his own. SVG had no choice but to play Shard at the 4.
Anyway, to answer the original question, I want Otis gone. He is horrible and has pretty much ruined the Magic's future. SVG, I'm fine with him being safe because I doubt we could get a better coach. Now if we could get Adelman I would reconsider.

The only reason they are keeping these guys is because it increases their chance to keep Howard. Bringing in a new coach and GM now would tell Howard you're pretty much giving up. Of course, I think Howard is gone eventually anyway... so they can just fire SVG and Otis after next season.
