Default How is Dirk German but His Last Name is Polish?

Dirk's last name is not German at all, I'm pretty confident that it is of Slavic/Polish origin.

Does anyone know anything about this? Is he only half German? Or did his family just live in Germany without having any German heritage?

Always have wondered about this

Dirk's dad banged a German woman and kept his father's last name.

The United States is a melting pot, a place that (aside from "native americans") does not have a specific ethnicity/nationality connected to it.

Russia is mainly filled with Russians, China is mainly filled with Chinese, Germany is mainly filled with native Germans.

Dirk plays for the German team, is considered German, but has a Polish last name. Considering that Germany is a place that has a specific group of people attached to it, unlike the melting pot that is the U.S....my question is legitimate.

Search google for "Multiculturalism has been a failure in germany, vice chancellor announces." Germany has opened its gated to immigration over the past decades.

also, note poland's geographic location

Dirk Werner Nowitzki is german. He is born and raised in Germany. But you're right his last name sounds slavic. But it's the logical consequence of the increased immigration from slavics to Germany over the last decades. So it could be possible and it's probably right that Dirk's ancestors came from Eastern Europe. We've lots of german sportsman with slavic, especially polish ancestors. E.g. Lukas Podolski and Miroslav Klose.

His grandpa chocked when he named himself. See the Golden state series.

Someone has to bring this up

Immigration left and right through the centuries. You also have to consider that last names have not been used for very long (not long meaning only a few centuries). So if his ancestors immigrated to Europe within earlier on in they could have adopted a German last name.

Been wondering the same thing, actually. His mother and father were both athletes that represented Germany on a national level (his father player handball, and I think his mother played basketball)
Still strange with the last name, though.

If you ever studied the history of Europe, you would learn that all the peoples from that area are interrelated.
