Re: Mavs and thunder game 1 freethrows
Many of Durant's 19 FTs came on "superstar" calls where he jumps into a defender standing straight up with arms straight up. A couple of Durant's FTs came off of that arm sweep move that is going to get changed by the league next year. The announcer even called it Durant's version of a flop.
Westbrook was also the beneficiary of some "star treatment" free throw shots as he often drove out of control into the lane. Plays that would earn most players in the league a charge or a humiliating block shot, inevitably ended up with Russel making a trip to the line.
It's kinda sad when OKC makes more FT than Dallas took, but it didn't seem to matter that the officiating was leaning towards the Thunder. The Mavs were good enough to over come the bias.
OKC Totals 37-43
Mavs Totals 34-36
3 of Dirks FTs came off of illegal defenses. 2 off of technical fouls. Dirk got consistently (and stupidly, might I add) fouled by OKC defenders trying to body him up 20+ feet from the basket. They jabbed his arms, they put two hands in his back, they bumped him with their knees and body to try to make him uncomfortable. Fortunately, the refs were not letting bullying tactics control the game. Dirk consistently torched the Thunder defenders time and time again, whether getting to the rim for an uncontested dunk, hitting his fade away jumper like a robot, or making a pinpoint pass for a three point shot or a dunk for a teammate. Dirk had probably the most efficient basketball game I have ever seen. He had one possession where he traveled late in the game and the announcers had a chuckle about him actually being human.
Overall the game was called in OKC's favor. Overall, the game was called too tightly for the game to have a lot of flow at times. But hopefully we will see less star treatment for Westbrook and Durant in game 2 and better flow from less fouls called.
