Not a big surprise there. I just hope it's a 2 year non-guaranteed deal that forces him to put up or shut up.

I'm guessing 3 year deal, 2 year option.

I can't imagine any GM who's looking to rebuild a program would accept a 2 year deal.

He gets one year, then becomes a lame duck again. Makes no sense.

Neither did the whole process. Leave the guy hanging while not actually bothering to search for/interview alternatives.

Effin MLSE.

I'm just being optimistic here since I've been on the "fire BC and Triano" team for a while now but MAYBE with him finally eating a bit of humble pie and seeing the light on Bargnani being expendable things could work out. I do like the type of team he's begun to rebuild, going more towards tough atheletic players than soft jump shooters with no hops and if nothing else he can make transactions happen, so if he starts to aim for the right kinds of players I'm pretty sure he can get them. As for Triano, next year's a write-off and the young guys are developing okay so whatever.

I know we’re inured to failure and laughable moves here. But take a step back here. Consider what Colangelo has done in 5 years after coming into a very promising situation. This is an unbelievable decision. 100% undeserved.

It will most likely be a 4 to 5 year. The Raps organization is known for longer contracts.

If it's a 5-year deal I take back any sense of positivity that was contained within my post.

MLSE are the best employers in the world. There aren't too many companies nice enough to let you fail at your job, making a laughing stock of the organisation in the process, for 5 whole years- and then give you another contract! Wonderfully generous people.

Definitely good news, I can't think of anyone out there that we could sign who'd be a better GM than Colangelo.

nice. I can't be too mad at that. At least the length of this deal shows that they finally decided that winning matters. And as DJMason said he will certainly have to eat a big slice of humble pie and accept that he's going to finally have to let go of some of the pieces he's been holding onto for dear life, in order to move forward.

At this point I guess this is a good thing. Having a GM, even a crappy one like Colangelo, is better than having no GM going into an important draft. This should be Colanlgelo's last chance.

But really, he should've been fired long before this. Early in the season or even last off-season. That would've given the ownership some time to find another GM.

Your definition of failing may be different than MLSE's.

Throughout the years, Colangelo has made MLSE money, whether we've been in or out of the playoffs. Profit = MLSE #1 priority.

Although we haven't cracked a playoff birth for some time now you guys act like BC set this team up for failure. Every single year he's put this team in a position to make the playoffs (the season that just passed was up for debate though). It's not his fault the pieces didn't work out as we all expected. Year after year there's always a lot of promise that comes from the organization and fans. Hell, even when we signed Hedo there was guys from this forum saying "hell yeah, we definately making a run this year!!" And you guys can't even deny that every year on paper, our team looks like they can compete.

I mean sometimes the dice doesn't roll your way but what can you do about it? Atleast BC is making the right moves now to properly build a contender and I think this is when we need him most. Anyone remember the post Bobcock era?? Our team was in shambles and BC turned the damn thing around. Unfortunately, things went downhill a bit too quick but heres to hoping for long term success this time around

Yes it is.

Colangelo made all the big decisions. He brought in all but one of the playing staff. The coach and all the assistant coaches, most of the rest of the staff.

He is paid a hell of a lot of money to be responsible for how the Raptors perform. He is responsible for the failure.

And it has been an abject failure. Any success the Raptors have had has been despite him, not because of him. He inherited Bosh, he inherited Calderon when he was hitting his peak, he inherited Mitchell on the cusp of winning coach of the year.

None of the personnel Colangelo has actually brought in has been nearly as good (though we all hope DeRozan and Davis will develop).

He took over a team in a superb position (young all-star, #1 pick, good point guard, second-best rookie of the year as a trading chip, bunches of cap space, the fact that it's the Raptors*). And then; he blew all the cap space on role players and had his best year in his first year. With much less wiggle room, the team slipped back in the second year, but still made the playoffs (thanks again to Bosh, Calderon and Mitchell). In the third year, he kneecapped the team by sacking Mitchell and replacing Triano and they blew what should have been an easy path to the playoffs in a weak East. Stupid moves made the next year just as poor. Then the year after, he put out a team that no one could possibly have thought would make the playoffs- and amazingly, he was actually trying to make the playoffs, only shifting to a rebuilding strategy midseason. Now, 1 hour from the 2011 draft lottery, the Raptors are in a far inferior position from where they were five years ago. Can anyone say that they so enjoyed the last five years of Raptors ball that they don't mind being here now? I expect pretty much all of us were disappointed with every Colangelo season except the first.

I haven't even got into the 'is aiming for the edge of the playoffs every year a good strategy?' debate.

*The Raptors have a huge potential, and Colangelo realised this when he came here. It sounds weird, but look at the ISH forums. We have what, the second or third biggest? With a history of chronically shit teams and hardly anything to root for? Toronto is the fifth largest city in North America, and if the only Canadian team is managed correctly it can call on almost a whole country for support. (To take another weird example, no team except possibly whichever one Yao Ming is on so boosts a player's all-star vote potential.) Even when the potential this franchise has has not been maximised- and it hasn't begun to be tapped- the team has an army of loyal fans. Although they have slipped down the attendance table for the last four years, it's pretty amazing that so many fans still show up and support the team. They aren't still doing that for the garbage Colangelo puts out.

A franchise like the Raptors shouldn't be sticking with a failed GM because they haven't got enough energy/imagination/balls/whatever to get rid of him and try someone else.

Default Re: Rumour: Colangelo about to get a new deal.

I don't actually buy into the conspiracy theories that the raptors are keeping BC because he is making them money.

The attendance has been dropping since he arrived, and obviously they would make a lot more $$$ if they made the playoffs.

This team was really raking it in the carter years.

The reason he was resigned is because the guy that makes the main decision (tannenbaum) really believes in BC (rightly or wrongly).

I think that is the storey with the short contract. A compromise between those on the board (of governors, not this board) that wanted to keep him and those that wanted to can him.

And when you look at the reality of the situation. If a new ownership group comes in they can still decide to can BC next off-season without issue - it will only cost 1 year of salary.

So let's just hope BC doesn't try to make the 8th seed this year by mortgaging the future. I will be pissed if he trades this pick.
