If you want to add kidd and dirk to that list, then by all means do it. That only strengthens my argument because those guys were in their primes in the early 2000s, the era I was comparing to today.

And maybe dwight will go down as a legend.. we'll have to wait and see. But I never feel he is as dominant as shaq, or garnett or duncan. He's dominating in a league that is devoid of great big men.

dirk wasn't in his prime in the early 2000s. mid 2000s is more like it.

I don't take the word Legend lightly.
There are stars, there are superstars, and then there are legends.

The only current legendary players are:
Shaquille Oneal
Tim Duncan
Dirk Nowitzki
Steve Nash
Lebron James
Dwyane Wade (borderline, though statistically and visually a "legend" candidate)
and Allen Iverson is already a legend in some eyes, wherever he is

Guys like Deron and Durant and Howard are great, but they aren't the stuff legends are made of...

Did you purposely leave off Kobe? I hope not.

Carmelo Anthony

Players that haven't reached their primes:

Well it wouldn't be far fetched to argue that Dirk is still in his prime. In fact, he's been considered one of the top players throughout the season, even before his tear through the playoffs. His legend is still being made.

But I see your point. While Dwight is one of the most celebrated big-man athletes in NBA history, I still think there's more he should've been able to do on offense with the lack of depth of big man talent in the league. As far as everyone else besides Wade, Bron, and Melo go, it is more accurate to say it's a "transitional" period, rather than it being watered down. It's kind of like 1998-2000, where all the new talented guys where there, but they hadn't quite yet hit their real stride.

Probably you can take the top 3 players of any era and they would be legend candidates.

So I can't consider guys like Melo/Pierce/Deron etc "legendary. They are great in their own right, I just don't consider them all time greats.

Not singling those guys out but they are allstars. Also, you have to be great in the playoffs to be considered legend and I just don't see how some of the guys listed have gone to another level in the playoffs.

That's why I really don't get the Wade being "boderline" legendary? Hes one of the best playoff performers of this era, had one of the most dominant finals performances of all time (no matter how many try to write it off) and might get yet another ring, yet he's borderline?

Some of you guys are confusing Legend with Hall of Famer. Ray allen, Paul Pierce, Chris Paul?? Not legends in the slightest bit. Hall of Famers? Yes

I would say Kobe, Shaq, KG, Tim, Bron, AI and maybe Wade.

AI wasnt as good as the others but the fame he had puts him up there for me.

Only active players.

Unreal level: Kobe, Shaq, Duncan, Lebron.

Legendary level: KG, Wade, Nash, Dirk, Kidd.

Notorious level: Dwight, Ray Allen, CP3, Pierce, Durant, TMac, Rose

Remarkable level: Ginobili, Carmelo, Yao, Vince, Pau Gasol, DWill, Rondo, Billups, Amare, Arenas, JJohnson, JOneal, Bosh, Artest, Ben Wallace, Baron Davis

Recognizable level: Redd, Granger, Hamilton, Rasheed, Jamison, Stojakovic, JRich, Parker, ZRandolph, McDyess, Terry, Kirilenko, Odom, Bibby, Monta, Rashard Lewis, Westbrook, Andre Miller, Gerald Wallace, Prince, , Mo Williams, Rudy Gay, Harrington, Maggette, Jefferson, Horford, Iguodala, Stephen Jackson, Griffin, Ilgauskas, Fisher, Joe Smith, etc.

AI would be borderline Legendary level in my opinion.

Dirk and Wade are both legends.

Wade is going to be a top 15 player of all time most likely when its all said and done.

Dirk is top 25 and climbing at the moment.

Its a sad day if being in the top 25 all time isn't enough to be called a legendary player.

And you can call them legends. I dont care if it's top 15, top 20, top 25.. whatever. I was just using the big 4 there that dominated in the early-mid 2000s. And right now, there seems to be only 1 player in the league on their level.. where as back then there were at least 4.
