I'll answer this question but in the opposite direction:
Dennis Rodman is remebered as a great player and he made the HOF. He was really a guy who did a couple of things very well and was for all intents and purposes a role player, and he played for some great teams and with great players basically his whole career.
Robert Horry is remembered as Big Shot Bob. Average role player who pulled a few clutch shots out of his ass. The random nature of statistics and dumb luck will favor someone.
James Worthy made the all time-50 list. Very good player who looked better by playing on great teams. Players like Dominique Wilkins and Bernard King (who were superior players) did not make the list. Perception is most of the game.
Penny Hardaway is remebered as a guy with HOF all-time-great potential. Fact is, talent wise he was closer to Brandon Roy/Joe Johnson than he was to Kobe Bryant/LeBron James. Gotta love the whole Penny marketing campaign - he got some mileage out of that.
The greatest chucker the game has ever seen. He single handedly destroyed an organization and was quite possibly the most overrated player to ever step foot on the hardwood.
Tim Hardaway - known for the killer crossover and co-leading the heat to choke in the playoffs. Better known to chuck tv's on the court and hating gay people
Juwan Howard - solid player who went 22-8-5 in his sophomore season and dropped off after that. Better known for getting that ridiculous contract and essentially breaking up the howard-cwebb duo.
Larry Johnson - explosive udersized power forward who abused players in the fast break. Better known for hitting the four point play and causing pandemonium
Allan Houston - overachieving shooter who was more athletic than people take him for. Better known for his giant contract and getting hurt prompting the nba to give out the allan houston clause which was never used on his contract. Should be called the derek anderson clause
