Henrik Mkhitaryan scores to tie it up after the Ites got a gift call for a PK goal. This dude needs to play for a bigger squad

You can put Defour in Dembele's place, move Dembele to either De Bruyne's place or erase De Bruyne's spot and put Dembele off the striker (which I still think might even be his best position). You can put Chadli in Maarten's spot, move De Bruyne into Dembele's spot. Even tho I disagree, you can put Witsel in Dembele's spot. You can even move Hazard into De Bruyne's spot and push him up a bit, leaving the wings for Maartens and Chadli or even Dembele in some free role.

That lineup is going to get torn a new asshole against any team with real side midfielders and real fullbacks. You can put Hazard and Mertens wide, but they are just going to go inwards again, that's simply their personality. There is a reason no team in the world plays like this.

If you are going to make a squad in that direction, it should be more like this:

Courtois
Alderweireld Vertonghen Vermaelen
Legaer Kompany Fellaini VDamme
Hazard Lukaku Mertens

At least Legaer and Van Damme are actually wide players. But there are still balancing issues, and Legaer is not a defender and Van Damme's quality is not close to acceptable.

Looking at the scoreboard, it looks like a disappointment, but the way our midfield played was really impressive considering it was against the Italian side. We had some great attempts which were just botched or the defense stepped up just in time. Our D needs a lot of work, they did well to whether the storm for the first 10-15 minutes, in which Italy should have scored multiple times, but they can't keep it up for a full 90 minutes. With how open the game was, Sarkisov should have been subbed in MUCH earlier, his pace would have caused havoc with the open field. Game of inches, slight changes of that here and there, it could very well have been us with the 3-1 victory, but all in all, good effort, continuing to head in the right direction but have a ways to go.

0-0 Halftime.

Bosnia needs to sub out Vranjes, kid is shitting himself.

Even game so far. Greece had better chances to score but we had more chances in total. Even possession as well.

Not true. I guarantee you Bielsa could pull this off.

I'm not asking anyone to be Bielsa, but the game can be played in any way. I'm not asking for special tactics, but an accommodation to the best formation and use of players possible.

Plenty of teams don't have naturally wide FB's, but they can still work. So instead of playing guys out of position, adjust and do something else. The wingers go in and out, yes, but the team can play the same way.

These are pros. They have the resources to work on it. With players as adaptable as the midfielders and defenders this team has, it's something that can work. There is plenty of Dutch influence and most of these players (especially the defenders) have come thru the Eredivise. It's better than what they're doing and it's worth a shot.

Bosnia 0 - 0 Greece Full Time.

I expected that, especially playing in Athens. Greece has to play Slovakia on Tuesday though and we play Lithuania.

I get what you are saying, you mean they should adopt an old Barcelona dream team, or Ajax mid-90s type of tactic.

There are some merits to these tactics, but you are talking about two of the most intelligent squads headed by the most intelligent managers of all time. There is a reason these formations have only been successfully used a handful of times in the past 40 years, it requires very disciplined institutionalized training methods and a very adaptable set of players. I don't really think it's achievable when you have a group who trains together a couple of weeks a year compiled of players who would have a very hard time to grasp even the basic dynamics of this system.
