I think under Casey we will see an improvement, and we will even see some defensive potential from certain players.

i hope he has the balls to bench players that aren't performing well.

As said, having a great defensive coach will do absolutely nothing unless you have the right players. If the so called team leader continues to be pathetic, then no coach is going to change the atmosphere of the team. We need the right players to play under a great coach.

very good choice.

Just read an article by smith in the star that would have me worried if i trusted that smith knew anything.

said the raptors were zeroing in on val, biyombo or leonard. with vessely and kemba as fallback!

that video by nba.com has it right. kemba is going to be the steal of this draft. favourite for roy.

I think Val,Biyombo and Leonard make the most sense. they have a Vessely in James Johnson type and they have a Kemba type in Bayelss. They need an all around SF who can score, a true Pg or a defensive C. The true PG probably isn't there, so the 3 above players make the msot sense to fill holes.

Yup, big upgrade. Casey's a steal for you guys. He's going to be a good one, a big upgrade over Triano on both ends of the floor.

The Raps arent good enough to draft to fill holes though, if thats what this is about. I don't know enough about the prospects to make any comment on them individually, but the Raps should be taking the best player available, period.

The Toronto Star blog says:

It’s not hard to understand why Casey would be seen as a desirable candidate to coach this team — he was reported to be the “defensive architect” behind the Mavs’ championship run this season, including the zone defense that confounded LeBron James and the Miami Heat in the Finals. I’m not sure how much credit Casey really deserves for the Mavs’ defense, considering that Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle has been one of the better defensive coaches in the league for quite some time. But Raptors fans can hope that he’s learned a lot from “the master” and can apply those strategies to a team that has had the NBA’s worst defense for two straight seasons.

Casey’s previous NBA head coaching experience was in Minnesota, where he compiled a 53-69 record over a season-and-a-half from 2005 to 2007. When Casey took over the Timberwolves for the 2005-06 season, he improved their Defensive Rating (points allowed per 100 possessions) from 15th overall in 2004-05 to 10th in the NBA in his only full season. Casey was fired midway through the 2006-07 season with a 20-20 record, and the T-Wolves proceeded to go 12-30 under his replacement, Randy Wittman.

u need players to play defense not a coach to demand they play defense.

this hiring is good i guess. a coach that demands effort. again, i need to see what changes bc makes in terms of players on this team.

I agree to an extent. But most of our players have the physical tools to be good defenders. They are for the most part young, quick and strong. If casey could get an old, slow team like dallas to defend I can't see why Toronto couldn't do the same.

Of course it would help to have a centre to anchor the d like chandler.

http://nba-point-forward.si.com/2011...ask-for-casey/

Dwane Casey has his work cut out for him!

Good read - honest assessment:

---

The personnel had a lot to do with that. Jose Calderon tries hard and talks a ton, but he’s a swinging door at point guard. Andrea Bargnani, the franchise centerpiece, is among the worst big men in the league in terms of help defense, closing on shooters and rebounding. The inexperienced wing players and front-line guys — DeMar DeRozan, Ed Davis and Amir Johnson — have shown some flashes, but they are young and raw, and they come with the usual flaws of players who are young and raw.

But no team should be quite this bad, this consistently. Jay Triano is, by all accounts, a good coach and a wonderful guy, but he could never get this team under control or bind it to a solid set of defensive rules. Players complained about a lack of accountability and film study, and though some of those complaints may have been targeted venting, the fact remains that this team just showed nothing on defense over two straight seasons.

----

Special note is to look at defensive efficiency chart in article. Look at the various line up combos'.

http://basketballvalue.com/teamunits...year=2010-2011

I know I have complained (among others) about Bargnani - Jose Calderon and their defensive liabilities.

Turns out the line ups with Reggie Evans were not much better.

It would seem the statistics tell us what we need to know - all the player have to starting putting up and shutting up with the possible exception of James Johnson.
