It already has... Melo's entire approach to impending free agency and leaving Denver was done in a way to try to avoid the kind of thing that went down with the whole James debacle. It was clear
that he was being very cautious and very open with the Nuggets for that very reason.
No one will ever be stupid enough to do something like that again.
It hasn't just impacted the way that players will approach impending free agency, either. It will and has had a significant effect on how organizations approach these situations. Cleveland allowed James to string them along and the result was that they got a trade exception for the best player in the league.
Utah wasn't about to be put in that kind of position by a malcontent, which is why Deron Williams was dealt at the first sign that he was on his way out.
Unfortunately, the Cavs and Raps had to be the guinea pigs for the AAU-ification of the league. Other teams/players learned and nothing like that will ever happen again.
