Ok, I just checked, and there used to be as many as 7 rounds in the NBA draft as late as 1987. I know there were fewer teams then than there are now, but that was still 161 picks. How in the hell do you find that many draft eligible players who are worthy of even being semi-considered for a shot to tryout for an NBA roster?
Now the draft is 60 picks long and a lot of these guys will never make it in the league.

i don't know how they did it before but after the d league was created in 2001, it seems everyone agrees to let the majority of them go there. then you evaluate them in competition rather than take so much time trying you out. call up, then tryout. that alleviates a lot of it.

There are still 52 rounds in the MLB Draft.
If the NBA still had 7 rounds people would be taking flyers on Juco guys or streetball players in Round 5.
