Default Replace Larry Bird with Dirk Nowitski on the 80s Celtics

How many more titles would the Boston Celtics win if they had Larry Bird replaced by the great Dirkules?

As you know while Larry Legend was a great player he also was on what is likely the most stacked team of all time, with the second greatest coach of all time Red Auerbach along with Robert Parish and the great Kevin McHale. Dirk never played with a player on Kevin McHale's level, let alone Robert Parish. Also Bird had lots of injuries so didnt win as many rings with his stacked team as he should have.

Dirk on the other hand has never had a stacked team or such a great coach as Auerbach. Instead of going in to war with guys like Kevin McHale, the man with the best post skills in NBA history and career 60% shooter, and "role players" like Bill Walton he would go into battle with the likes of Jason Terry and JJ Barea and Antawn Jamison. Don't hold his one ring against him.

Dirk also is not injury prone like Larry Bird so would have been able to play longer with the stacked team surrounding him and wouldn't have to retire early and waste his 30s with injury.

Let's take off the revisionist goggles here people and stop overrating the past, I honestly think those Celtics would be better and would have won more titles with Dirk replacing Larry.

Zero. Dirk wasn't the defender, playmaker or scorer (on volume) Bird was.

Bird was not or barely a better defender than Dirk was. All Bird ever did well was play the passing lanes, because it is not like he was a shut down defender like MJ was.

Dirk is a better scorer and shooter than Larry, his perimeter game would give McHale even more space down low to iso

Probably comes out about the same.

Dirk wasn't the player Bird was early in his career.

Bird fell off starting at age 32. Dirk is probably only going to get better over the next 3 years.

Yes, he was. A better man to man defender easily. And yes, he did play the passing lanes, which alone made him better.

Dir would've won just as many titles.

Dirk's won 1 Title and was close to another with Jason Terry as his second option.
Give him Parish McHale, Ainge, Walton, Maxwell etc. and three titles should absolutely be possible.

A better shooter, yes... Not a better scorer though. The post? LOL...what? Clearly you never watched a prime Larry Bird.

Tell me how Bird was a better man to man defender, besides overrating the past. And no playing the passing lanes better does not make one better than the other defensively. Was Allen Iverson a better defender than Anderson Varejao?

No doubt Bird was a better player.

However, the idea that Dirk wins 0 titles playing on some of the most stacked teams in NBA history is laughable.

Dirk would win 2 or 3. Doesn't make him equal to Bird. Winning a title is more about teammates stepping up and a little bit of luck.

If Dirk had those two things go his way like Bird did, I see no reason to think that Dirk doesn't win a few titles.

0 though? LOL

Replace Bird with Dirk, and they don't get past Showtime.

These boards become more dumb by the day.

This sounds right. It has nothing to do with Dirk being as good as Bird, it has more to do with Bird's supporting cast.

The rules helped him be a better defender alone (handchecking, etc). He moved his feet well and was actually a pretty good help defender.

And yes, playing the passing lanes does make him better when you factor in Dirk doesn't do anything well defensively. Allen Iverson and Anderson Varejao? What a weak analogy. Anderson Varejao actually predicated his game off the defensive end - Dirk?

That's a misconception, especially as far as playoffs are concerned. Look at this:

0. Dirk would ride the bench behind McHale.
