Hey all, I thought it might be fun to rip off the truehoop 5 on 5 questions and have all of us present our lame ideas. Anyhoo, here are the 5 questions from the latest roundtable.
Quote:
1. Which team must make a major move this offseason?
2. Take your pick: Tyson Chandler, Marc Gasol, Nene Hilario, Yao Ming or Greg Oden.
3. Who’s the best non-center available this summer?
4. Bargain hunting: Who’s the best buy on the market?
5. Use the Trade Machine to make a deal that should happen.
1. The Celtics. This teams frontcourt is about as old as it gets (in terms of actual active players). Is Jeff Green worth bringing back? As a 3? It seems unlikely they would move pierce, but its hard to imagine this team making a deep playoff run without a relatively significant roster shuffle.
2. Presuming a similar market value for the first three, I think you have to go with Gasol. He may not be as good a defender as chandler or as athletic and quick as nene, but at his age, he seems the best choice.
3. JJ! nah, this is kind of hard. Even the third tier centers are pretty deep in this offseason (chuck “wagon” hayes, kwame, foster, ratliff, fesenko, haddadi, wilcox-pf/c, etc.). I’m actually pretty excited about the big men on the market this summer (landry, west, humphries, mcBob).
Anyways, back on task. I will chose 3.
Caron Butler
Aaron afflalo
AK
4. Leon Powe? nah, not sure what he still has. Probably mbah a moute or telfair
5. Well, its a pipe dream, but what the hey. http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=6yxvl8e
Detroit trades rip, gets memo (saves a year) and asik
Utah trades memo, gets brewer and korver back!
Chicago trades asik, brewer and korver, gets rip
1. the lakers come to mind. suffice it that i am extremely pessimistic about their chances to get back to the big dance. kobe's inability to practice with the team is not a terrible liability during the season but is fatal during the playoffs IMO. i question whether gasol is on the rapid downward path of his career. i wonder when the same happens to odom. i question whether bynum's body will ever hold up during a full season and playoffs and wonder how much time he really has left, despite his tender age. in short, i hate to be pessimistic towards such an elite team, but i can't help but wonder- maybe it's best to blow the team up now instead of committing to years of 'very good, but not championship caliber'. with all due respect.
2. i'm going to go with the hot hand, i.e. chandler. he might not even be a top-five center, but he's found the perfect opportunity to maximise his skills... the way that most other players can only dream about dreaming about. meanwhile i like gasol and hilarious a lot, but i'm not sure they'll ever have that level of potency with a team. yao and oden are two of the most decent human beings and talented centers to ever play the game, i suspect, but their bodies simply aren't willing. yao in particular hurts a lot, given how unstoppable an offensive force he'd become and given how harshly the chinese sports system abused him.
3, 4. no clue.
5. feeling lazy ATM, but i'll go with lebron for howard with filler to be determined on both sides. the signs are subtle, but increasingly potent, that howard wants out. meanwhile, despite the fabulous bargain the heat get with lebron's salary, despite his amazing talent, he brings a subtle yet mind-boggling number of negatives to a team. on the other end, howard still has (some) areas to work on, but you can build your whole offense and defense around the guy like nobody else in the league. AND count on him to be a positive influence and always show up, no matter what. plus, his presence opens up worlds... nay, galaxies... for wade and bosh... the way that lebron does in theory, but not so well on the court.

That is a pipe dream.

Who gets screwed? the bulls for giving up asik? I think its fairly even, though it'd be nice for the bulls to get back a big of some sort to even it out (but all the reasonable bigs on utah and det are free agents. someone like maxiell puts them over the cap). Anyways to improve it and make it more realistic?
New round of questions
1. What should the Magic do with Dwight Howard?
2. What should the Nets do with Deron Williams?
3. What should the Hornets do with Chris Paul?
4. What should the Suns do with Steve Nash?
5. What should the Celts do with KG and Ray Allen?
A. Trade him this offseason.
B. Deal him at the 2012 trade deadline.
C. Hold on to him.
1. Hard to see them getting close to equal value back for him. If they could move him for lebron, blake or durant, you do it. Other than that, I think you hold on to him and hope that the next CBA gives you a major advantage in keeping him.
2. Definitely dont trade him before the offseason, as they have hardly seen him on this team. I think he may stay if they show signs of improvement and are really going to be in brooklyn soon. I say keep him.
3. The hornets are pretty ****ed. They have some huge and crappy contracts, no owner and poor attendance. I think you have to move him (with some other large contract of course) for a bunch of young pieces. Hes not staying and this team is in limbo. Before the season
4. Wouldnt he look fun on MIA? ha. this one is a sticky one, as their are all sorts of emotions and legacy issues that go along with it. I think they have to move him to get better in the long run, but I also dont think Sarver will do it. He stays.
5. Cut the ****ing cord. All the pundits on espn saying ainge has to give these guys one more chance at a title? Sorry, but without some major changes, this team will be hard pressed to do anything serious in the post season. KG is old and a shell of himself with terrible knees. Together, these two dudes are owed over 30 million. Their frontcourt is a mess outside of KG and I think the only way to improve it is to move KG for some athletic youngsters. But who wants him? Sure, hes a huge expiring deal which may give you cap space to go after, say, Howard, but what could you realistically get for him? I think the celts have to be proactive with their three big contracts if they want to be a serious player next year. Of the 9 players they are paying $72 mil to next year (or at least "paying" in terms of the cap), two (sheed $6mil and shaq $1.5mil) are retired. that leaves them well over the cap with only 7 active players on their roster, which includes the QO on jeff green. The only big on the squad is an old before his time J Oneal. They need to package him with either pierce (ik ik, no way) or kg and bring back about 4-5 young pieces or this team will be terrible in 2-3 years.
1. Howard stays and Orlando finds out what they can get for Bass, Nelson and maybe Reddick. Next offseason we'll see what happens. I don't think there will be that many enticing places for Dwight Howard to go.
2. Keep him. They traded away their future for him, all they can do now is to keep their fingers crossed. I don't like their chances though, that is NOT a good supporting cast.
3. Get rid of everyone. Chris Paul should be easy to turn into draft picks and young prospects. Okafor and Ariza don't have the best contracts, but both of them are good enough that there will be some takers anyway.
Once all the big contracts are gone and the team is loaded with draft picks and prospects; move the team somewhere. Probably Seattle.
4. Basically let Nash decide. Whether he stays or goes; it's not of great consequence to the team. So do your 'former' franchise player a courtesy and let him decide his future more or less. If the Suns trade him though, they better try to tack on some of those horrible contracts they've handed out.
5. This Celtics team is going to die a slow and painful death over the next few seasons. They knew this when they made their moves for Allen and Garnett. They knew that they would contend for a couple of seasons and then would be screwed for probably around half a decade. The Celtics can't do anything about that now.

Give me a decent deal and I'm all for it - can't see it though. Unless teams really, REALLY need to cut costs we might prise a decent big and a bad contract off someone for KG, but unless it is Cousins, Bynum (not happening) or Howard I'm not interested.
Sort me out a Rondo + whoever for Chris Paul and we're talking.
1. Which team must make a major move this offseason?
Orlando, that being said, I can't see them pulling of a good move due to their lack of pieces. I think New Jersey makes big signing this off-season tho.
2. Take your pick: Tyson Chandler, Marc Gasol, Nene Hilario, Yao Ming or Greg Oden.
Top choice: Marc Gasol. He's young and a true center. Great all-around player. Nene is more consistent, but more of a PF and a pretty poor rebounder for his size. Chandler is great defensively but is older and has had injury concerns.
3. Who’s the best non-center available this summer?
I'll say Arron Afflalo. He's young, always improving and has the best work ethic and attitude I've ever seen. David West might be the better player, but he's older and just had a big injury.
4. Bargain hunting: Who’s the best buy on the market?
JR Smith, Joel Pryzbilla and Kwame Brown. All 3 are probably not getting huge deals but will be great contributors for any playoff team.
5. Use the Trade Machine to make a deal that should happen.
Iguodala and Speights for Kaman and Foye. Makes too much sense for both teams IMO.
New round of questions 1. What should the Magic do with Dwight Howard?
C (hold on to him). They really don't have a choice unless they really like Bynum and Odom or Noah and Deng. I think he walks as a FA. 2. What should the Nets do with Deron Williams?
Let me say this, if he hasn't re-signed by the deadline, they should trade him... but I think there's no way they do. Prokohovic just went all in on this guy and they're gonna hold onto him, even if it means he walks. 3. What should the Hornets do with Chris Paul?
Trade him most likely at the deadline. I see this playing out just like the Melo situation except New Orleans has much less leverage (Denver had the CBA uncertainty and NJ's offer as leverage). I see him being traded to NY along with Okafor for Billups, Shumpert, Fields and Turiaf. 4. What should the Suns do with Steve Nash?
This one is tricky. I say they trade him at the deadline, but I don't see them getting as much as they expect. But if Nash says he wants to stay, he'll stay.I think this one is all on Nash's decision. Phoenix owes it to him. 5. What should the Celtics do with KG and Ray Allen?
Hold onto both of them, go for one last run and try for a major FA in 2012.
