After agreeing with New Jersey Nets guard Deron Williams on a contract to join his Turkish team during the NBA lockout, Besiktas coach Ergin Ataman declared his next target: Los Angeles Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant.
Ataman will travel to the United States with Besiktas management officials next week to trumpet the signing of Williams, and wants to arrange a meeting with Bryant and Bryant’s agent, Rob Pelinka, he told Yahoo! Sports on Thursday afternoon.
“After we signed Deron, we started to look around and find a friend of his, find other NBA stars, who want to come over and play with us,” Ataman told Yahoo! Sports. “If Kobe wants to play with Deron in Istanbul, we can discuss this.”
Bryant is willing to listen to overseas offers, sources close to him told Yahoo! Sports on Thursday. Those could come out of Europe or the Far East, and, yes, even Istanbul, the gateway bridging Europe and Asia. - Yahoo
InsideHoops says: Means nothing. Everyone on Earth is usually "willing to listen to offers."
He is already signed to an endorsement deal in Turkey. Playing over there could make him even more popular globally and could net him even more endorsement deals overseas. I wouldnt be surprised if he strongly considers playing over there. He is the most popular player internationally and that could increase even more over there. He could make a lot more money.
what do you think?
Kobe signing in Europe would help the NBAPA or not?
i think it would be a great sign to the owners that their players can play and get payed everywhere.

yes but no way will nba stars or role players make as much as they did in the nba playing in the overseas leagues (strictly speaking on player salary). So in a way, the owners are looking at paying the nba players around what the euroleague teams are paying them now.

Oh poor guy, how will he survive on that , but seriously most euro teams will pay the taxes and furnish a home and car for american star players.
Bottom line is that in case of a prolonged lockout guys will still have substantial income.

He'll also be paying US taxes on that car that home and PA, He'll also pay taxes on that income and if the team gives him money to pay the US taxes he'll be taxed on that too.
He won't live there long enough to Qualify for Bona Fide Resident status so he'll be paying taxes as if he earned the money in the United States. All those perks are considered Gifts under the Overseas Tax Code
Uncle Sams arms are long and very thorough when it comes to US citizens going overseas to make a living

US cannot tax anyone on a free home rental or car overseas, they can only tax income.......this can also be offset or bypassed by a smart accountant......worse case is that they won't have to pay taxes until well after the lockout is over....so it very effectively does the intended job.

Go read the overseas tax code
The only way they don't tax a home and (supplied meals) is if they are supplied by the Employer and the housing is on the employers property and you're living there for the convenience of the employer or for security reasons.
The other exception is Bona Fide Resident status which means you must live in that foreign country for a minimum of 365 days. Or if you make less than 93,000 total (including the price of the housing) both conditions which Williams will no not meet
Quote:
Use of employer’s property or facilities.
Use of employer’s property or facilities.
If you receive fringe benefits in the form of the right to
use your employer’s property or facilities, the fair market value of that right is earned income. Fair market value is the price at which the property would change hands between a willing buyer and a willing seller, neither being required to buy or sell, and both having reasonable knowledge of all the necessary facts.
Example:You are privately employed and live in Japan all year. You are paid a salary of $6,000 a month. You live rent-free in a house provided by your employer that has a fair rental value of $3,000 a month. The house is not provided for your employer’s convenience. You report on the calendar-year, cash basis. You received $72,000 salary from foreign sources plus $36,000 fair rental value of the house, or a total of $108,000 of earned income.
