Default Do teams really need 3 point shots?

I see a lot of 80s & early 90s teams barely shoot 3 pointers at all. Even the great teams. And their 3pt percentage are a lot lower than today's teams. So can today's teams be considered better / more advanced than old teams? Or are 3pt shots ultimately not very useful and it's better to just shoot the nearer 2?

3 point shots are a great tool. They are actually quite efficient--especially the corner three--and spread the floor. Teams without 3 point shooters usually suffer from poor spacing and bad offensive efficiency.

no, the 09-10 Lakers proved that somewhat. They worked mostly inside the 3-ball line.

yeah the triangle is pretty much the only elite offensive system that doesn't rely on the three ball much

A good 3 point shooter shoots say little under 40% from 3.
The league average for a regular fieldgoal is what, 50%?
40% from 3 > 50% from 2.

Ofcourse these numbers are a result of eachother, if players would be camping out on the three all day instead of attacking the basket for a drive and kick the 3 pt percentage would be lower.

Mavericks rained death from three point land in the playoffs and the finals.

Lack of 3 point shooting from the opposition is a huge reason they beat the Lakers and Heat.

The three-pointer was only introduced in 1980 so the league as a whole weren't that good at it. So coaches didn't utilize it. Nowadays, every player has been practicing the three since gradeschool and most good teams have 2-3 guys who can shoot threes. The percentages are so much higher now than they were in the 80's. Coaches now run plays to get wide open threes. Also with the improved team defensive schemes, you need the three to open up the floor. You have to be a very good inside scoring team to avoid using the three these teams. Very few teams have good interior scoring to just give it up.

It's part of the evolution of the game.

It is better to shoot any 2 shot, closer to the basket.

But the 3pt shot spread the defense and allows more spacing.

You don't need the 3pt shot to be successful, but having players with the ability to shoot the long ball will spread the defense. Players just get too trigger happy. Teams shoot too many 3s.

I don't think it's so much that the 3 point shot is used for more advanced teams. The greatest teams always had guys that could post up... so mostly bigs and you could include the 90's bulls. The post up game opens up the floor... Kareem, Hakeem, MJ, Shaq, Mchale, Bird, Parish, Duncan, Kobe, Gasol.

These kinds of guys are needed to open up the floor. They don't exist today (well, to be more precise... they don't exist at the moment).

Mavs drained the 3 ball.
