Default U.S. suspends some aid to Pakistani military

With ties between the two nations strained after American commandos killed Osama bin Laden in a Pakistani garrison city, the Obama administration said it will suspend more than one-third of the $2 billion in annual U.S. aid to Pakistan's military.

President Obama's chief of staff, William Daley, confirmed Sunday that the United States will hold back $800 million of the money the administration had committed to assist the Pakistani military.

Pakistani authorities have pulled back on the country's level of cooperation with the U.S. in recent months.

Pakistani officials "have taken some steps that have given us reason to pause on some of the aid which we were giving to their military," Daley said on ABC's "This Week." The suspension of aid was first reported in the New York Times.

Describing the relationship with the Pakistani government as "very complicated," Daley said that Obama's decision to launch the raid against Bin Laden without giving the Pakistani government advance notice is "something that the president felt strongly about and we have no regrets over."

I think most of the reason they gave them aid in the first place was because they needed them in Afghanistan, no matter how much they screwed us over. Now that Afghanistan is starting to wined down, we probably don't need their help so much.

its time we cut aid to all of our so called "allies" who aren't cooperating with us. Regardless of it being Pakistan or Israel...if u are going to misbehave and abuse our friendship, we should cut them off. This is the only way to send a message to our so called "allies" who are out there to take our money but never return any favors.

I am Pakistani-American and I'm happy to see USA finally play some hardball. I would like to make one correction though. Pakistan has not received that much "aid" money as a lot of us think. A lot of it has been fees Pakis charged for military operations, usage of local bases and resources. IMO that's something we should do with the govts of Iraq and Afghanistan. Charge them for use of our military resources towards their defense. Especially Iraq with it's oil reserves.

Pakistan cooperating or not, the US wouldn't have been able to completely "stop out" Al Qaeda. Isn't much of Al Qaeda based in Yemen now anyway? There's always going to be another country to run to.

it seems to me like they found a trove of information when they killed Bin Ladin which has helped them find out who else are running Al Qaeda, but haven't outright stated or mentioned anything directly about what they recovered. I know they referenced that raid tho in regards to a lot of their optimism in taking out Al Qaeda now, and i believe them.

Pakistan has gotten real shady ever since we realized they've been harboring Bin Ladin in their city amongst other Al Qaeda leaders, but i really wonder how much of their government is involved. I don't trust their people tho, i swear every pic i see it screams 'we hate Americans'

Who is anticipating a WWIII sometime in the near future?
I'm not a conspiracy theorist but I have a feeling that we'll be looking at a Great War Part 3 in a few years.
