Default DVDs are pretty much the greatest Christmas present known to man

thats all I do for Christmas... unless I can think of a really great gift idea for someone, I just buy eveyrone a DVD, and then indicate that we should see the movie together sometime. then I spend all of winter break hanging out and watching movies with people. that way you've gotten them a decent gift, and you get to see all the movies you never caught in theaters. its genius. and everyone likes movies. you can't go wrong.

warning though: don't buy a DVD for a really poor person who doesn't have a DVD player. you'll look like a total douche.

a usuable DVD player goes for about $30 now. who doesn't have a DVD player?

moreover, computers usually come with the software/codecs to play DVDs as well.

You didn't dare just compare watching DVDs on a computer to the New York Knicks...

I watched a few DVDs on my computer and it was more like watching the Washington Wizards play...not that great but good enough to keep watching.

Yes, "everybody likes movies", but not everybody likes (or wants) any movie. Only way I'll buy somebody a DVD is if it will have some sentimental value. Like if it's a special movie that has meaning for the reciever...

For example, one of my stepdad's favorite movies is "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly", so if I were to buy him a DVD that'd be it. Or, my mother has always been a huge fan of "Young Frankenstein", most likely that would make a better DVD than anything else.

Yes, DVDs are good, but only if you choose the right ones, for the right people. Buying people meaningless DVDs is no fun. Ends up looking like a cop out. Giving people DVDs ony YOU are interested in isn't cool either... unless you're comfortable being self absorbed.

dvds are the worst presents ever...

they are the least personal and the most thoughtless present.

its like something that "i don't know what to buy the person, so i get him a dvd, can't be wrong" kinda thing.

The only time I buy DVD's is when they have crazy deals like 3 used DVD's for 10 dollars. I really have no incentive to buy a DVD, you can download a movie within 2 hours and I get to enjoy it on my Labtop.

BTW, DVD's are a bad christmas present, unless you ask them if they have the fluck or not. You'll probably end up buying them a DVD they have, better off getting a Gift Certificate.

In my opinion, a gift certificate is the worst "gift" you can give, at least to somebody that means something, and you come in contact with often (I can understand sending you're cousin across the state a certificate, etc). You might as well just be giving that person money. Why limit them to one store? Just break out the bills and hand em over if you're intent on giving someone money... If y'all think DVDs are impersonal, gift certifaces are REALLY impersonal. Sure, it's nice too give them options, but you're pretty much saying, "I couldn't think of anything to buy you, so I'm giving you some money". That's okay with borderline friends/co-workers (etc), but I wouldn't cop out like that to anyone that meant anything to me (family, close friends, etc).

no, that would be cash. second place is gift cards. plus they cost more (you can't give someone a 10 dollar gift card unless you're below the poverty line... 20's the minimum).

not everyone has the energy to make personalized gift baskets, clay sculptures, BFF necklaces, or whatever the hell you do. they're lucky I give them presents at all. I dont have to. some of my friends dont even do christmas presents but I'll give em a DVD anyway.

it helps to have a decent knowledge of movies so that you can make an educated selection. if you think Lady In The Water is a porno, you should probably stick to giving gift certificates cause you're going to make a major screwup buying blind (such as giving a friend whose pregnant "Kids." bad move)

I dont buy Christmas presents for people I just met off the street you know. usually I have either been to this person's house, or live with this person. if I'm in doubt, I just hit deepdiscountdvd's and get some obscure movie nobody's ever heard of that I know they'll like so I won't get duplicates.

Some gift certificates are ok. This year I got my sister one for a hair place, because she really wants to do something (color maybe? - I honestly don't know), but she's completely broke. Just an extra something that she wouldn't normally be able to have, but now she can. That's when it's ok.

But something like movie money? Not so hot.

Or, *gasp*, a friend who may be HIV positive. Yikes, talk about a bad gift.

There's a fine line between a gift certificate and an actual gift. This, imo, crosses the line into "actual gift" (which is cool). Something like this (or sending you're mate to a Spa, etc) may appear in the form of a gift certificate, but it really isn't.

A typical gift certificate is one to, say, Best Buy, Circuit City, or Barnes & Nobles. A store that you were too lazy to walk into and actually find something that fits your friend/family member.
