Sounds noble and all, but that's not how the SEC works. If Arkansas fires Petrino they could potentially fall back into Mississippi/Vanderbilt territory.
Agree, but Arkansas has always been a notch or two above Mississippi and Vanderbilt territory. Those are 3rd tier SEC programs. If Arkansas does fire Petrino they'll go back to being a middling 6-8 win program. Ole Miss and especially Vanderbilt are perennial 3-5 win programs.
The ASP report was finally released today about the main cop who was involved with the motorcycle crash. Since some local media members had spent the last few days releasing Tweets and whatnot about some very damming evidence that would hurt Petrino's case even further, it kind of had fans on pins and needles. Fortunately, for those in the "Keep Petrino" camp, Petrino did not lie to the police, the cop was told about the passenger on the motorcycle, and there's nothing you can really take away from the report that makes this any worse. If anything, there might be some small details that help Petrino's case but you'd have to grasp at some straws more than likely.
What I think was the biggest mistake was letting Petrino have a press conference just a day after being released from the hospital because he was apparently pretty seriously injured and disoriented. And while in the hospital he was more than out of it due to pain medications and whatnot. There was already people pointing out how loopy he seemed during the press conference the day after being released out of the hospital. There's some speculation now that Petrino may not have even been the one to give Jeff Long the information for the initial press release due to the state he was in and it was his family instead. Not saying I buy any of that, but it is being thrown around by some of the overly irrational Petrino supporters.

College athletics (at the higher levels for football/basketball) are basically pro leagues with lowly-paid "student-athletes" that do the servant work. Billion-dollar TV deals, 8 figure annual paychecks to schools for just being in a conference, coaches getting paid 3/4 million a year while his starting LB can't even afford a nice pair of sneakers without the help of "others". And those booster "contributions" dry up real fast when the team sucks.
So the AD either deserves to be fired for keeping this scumbag employed, or he deserves to be fired because he can't find anyone else not dripping with rancid douchebaggery that can win enough games to placate the fan base.
Allowing this kind of crap to continue is what perpetuates the disaster that college sports have become.

I agree, but if anyone thniks Arkansas is the only who would keep their coach under the same circumstances is either lying to themselves or completely oblivious to what college sports has become.
Petrino is probably going to be kept and, sleaziness aside, he's one of the best coaches in America who will probably continue to win games, and all of this will be all but forgotten in a year or two.
All of the various Arkansas media outlets have been summoned to "The Hill". Very likely a decision is going to be announced sometime tonight. There's four or five people on the Razorback message board I frequent that says their "sources" are saying Petrino is going to be kept. I'm choosing to ignore those posts the best I can and assume nothing.
ESPN reporting he's out. I'm not surprised and my ethical side and morals will ultimately be happy about the decision but, like most Hog fans, now and in the immediate future it's a little discomforting and disappointing.

It's not a perpetuation. It's a reality. The only sporting organization with less integrity than the NCAA is FIFA, and that's saying a lot considering how much shady stuff has been going on with the various leagues in this country.
There is word circulating that Petrino showed up at the Broyles Athletic Complex a little after 4:00 CST. People were already leaking information that he was there to meet with long, hash out penalties, and come to an agreement so that he could be retained as the coach. That has led to people speculating that Petrino must not have agreed to one, some, or all of the penalties Long wanted to hit him with.
If that's the case, and Petrino couldn't swallow his pride to accept a suspension and cut in pay, then don't let the door hit your pompous arrogant ass on the way out you piece of shit. If not, and Long just felt this was the best decision, then it's unfortunate and I'm sorry it couldn't be worked out, but you don't have anyone else to blame but yourself. It sucks because the Arkansas football will slip back into mediocrity and irrelevance but being upset at Jeff Long is unwarranted. With that said, I expect there to be some ridiculous and irrational backlash from fans tonight and the next few days after Long officially announces he's been fired.

I think its more likely that once they found out he had also given the woman a $20k "gift" on top of hiring her his goose was cooked.

You're not telling me anything I don't know about the NCAA. But this isn't an NCAA decision; it's one being made by one member university.
You can either do the right thing, or excuse doing the wrong thing because everybody else is doing it.
This article says that Petrino gave her a $20,000 'gift' and a yearly salary of $50,000. 150 people applied for the fundraiser job and she was the one hired.
I'll give Ms. Dorrell some credit. That is some tremendous gold-digging. Monica Lewinsky would be proud.
