Default Bigger Hawks draft mistake: Mullin or Paul/Williams?

The Hawks could have drafted Chris Mullin, who would have been Dominique's Pippen, but instead drafted Koncak.

The Hawks could have drafted Paul or D. Williams but drafted Marvin Williams.

Which was the bigger mistake?

coming out of st. john's.. Mullin was projected as a locker room problem.. and he did have alcohol problems in his college-early NBA years..

but the Koncak pick was bad nonetheless..

nique and mullin played the same position
...koncak just never panned out

unc had just won the ncaa...lot of their guys went first round on the wave of that run..

nobody projected paul or williams to be elite pgs... but marvin looked like he could be a decent swingman

neither was a bone headed mistake.....but koncak was a bust....so that turned out to be the more foolish decision

Except, pretty much everyone did. I remember people calling Chris, St. Paul, The Savior of New Orleans, before he even played his first NBA game.

This. Hawkfan is using revisionist history on this one.

On the topic of Marvin Williams going #2, that is one of the worst draft decisions in NBA history. They already had Al Harrington(SF/PF), Josh Smith(SF/PF), Boris Diaw(SF/PF), & Josh Childress(SF) currently on their roster. The addition of Marvin Williams was not needed. You cant put out a lineup with 4 Forward's on the court, this isnt the 83' Bucks.

The addition of a PG was badly needed for the Hawks. The "upside" of Marvin Williams was not worth passing on a PG for.

Now we're going to look back as CP3 and Deron put together HOF caliber careers.

This.

Paul, Williams, & Felton had a lot of hype coming into that draft. However, Paul & Felton were expected to be the best ones out of the bunch.

Passing on 2 Great PG's for Marvin.

Mullin was never best at his position not a single year.

CP3/Dwill Fought each other at the TOP for good 3 years.

What? Both Paul and Williams were their respective team's best player on a top 5 team. Marvin was the 6th man on his team.

The only reason why Marvin seemed so intriguing as a prospect was because of his size and athleticism, not because of his skill.

Jon Koncak had an NBA ready body, was a 7 footer, was an Olympian, was an All American, averaged a double double as senior, and was white (this was important for teams in the 80s).

He was a no-brainer at the 5 spot where Atlanta was picking.

Chris Mullin was seen as an unathletic, alcoholic shooter, not worth the gamble at 5 (despite being white). Mullin also spent the early part of his career getting over his bouts with alcohol and various injuries.

Also this was an era where teams ALWAYS drafted size first and foremost.

The Williams pick was just putrid, the kid didn't start for his college team for crisesakes! F*cking horrendous, one of the last vestiges of the era where people focused too much on potential.

I'm going to go with the first one as the bigger mistake.

As Hawks already had Joe Johnson at that point right? If they drafted Paul/D-Will, they wouldn't have been bad enough to get Al Horford. But I'm glad how this turned out. If Paul went to Portland or Atlanta, he might not have been the player he is today. (playing with Johnson or Roy)
