So a qb will get a higher rating if he airs it out for a td rather than some screen pass with great blocking and guy takes it 50 yards?

yes exactly, the way it should be

there is also a "clutch " factor...I assume that 4th quarter and 4th down situation get more emphasis than other plays...

Is there a site that shows how QBR is broken down for a player?

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/69...-total-qbr-faq

That kind of shows how it works and explains the clutch factor. The problem with QBR is a lot of the stats aren't out there for people to read, like "Tom Brady passed for a 35 yard TD all in the air" or "Kolb threw for a 70 yard TD, 6 yards through the air". Fans just have to trust that this stuff is accurately measured.

Quote:
On the other side, noted football author and researcher Brian Burke of Advanced NFL Stats opined that QBR was superior to the traditional passer rating.[9] The main advantages, in his opinion, are QBR's accounting for many more events in quarterback play than the old rating, and the fact that it avoids the double-counting that plagues the official NFL passer rating. He did however lament the proprietary nature of the statistic, and predicted it would not become widely used so long as its precise computation details were kept secret (e.g. it is unlikely that CBS, Fox, NBC, and other competing media outlets would want to heavily promote something that is proprietary to ESPN).
You can kind of compare it to baseball. While the old schoolers are still using .AVG to determine how good a hitter is, the new schoolers moved on up to OPS and WAR even though it isn't commonly talked about.

So It's a stat invented by ESPN and they won't explain the fine details?

Yeah, no way I trust this stat AT ALL.

I don't trust ESPN period. Or their dumbass attempts to be cutting edge and ahead of everything.

Collins being last is probably right. Two back to back fumbles inside his own 20. Indy gave up 34, and while the Texans did gash us with the run, it wasn't as bad as the #s make it look. One of the TDs was a kick return right before half (sweet TO Caldwell), they were behind in TOP by 13 minutes (the vast majority of that had to come in the 1st half) so they were understandably gassed. On drives that started anywhere behind Indy's 20 the D only gave up 13 points.

Yeah, Collins sucks.

I never liked QB rating anyway. I think if you watch a game you could get a feel for how a QB played. You don't need a stat to tell you that.

You could take in all the info and different situations yourself.

EDIT: You know what there is one instance it comes in handy. When comparing two QB's in comparable situations.

I think QB rating for a year is good...but not for a career

it is impossible for a QB to have a rating of 100.0+ and have secretly "sucked"

it is impossible for a QB to have a rating -50.0 and have actually been great

it tells a decent story I think...in the ball park anyway

for the most part it is a decent combo of every QB stat...but it does have flaws yeah, like the one State pointed out

Hope in the offseason ESPN puts a lot of time into applying it to a lot of old school guys, Unitas, Montana, Fouts, Marino, Bradshaw, Moon, etc etc. Probably impossible though, they apparently analyze every single play a QB's involved in so you'd need a lot of tape.

good post State, I think you just sold me on this rating with this post
Did anyone actually watch the game? Kolb had a great game, he was accurate, used his mobility to get out of the pocket and make plays when there was pressure, and he did everything a good quarterback should do leading the offense very well, as well as didn't throw any picks. These rating systems don't mean anything, just watch the game and decide who played good and who didn't yourself.

Of course that's the best way but if you have time to watch 16 nfl games a week you need to get off of unemployment.

Levi Brown was absolutely terrible on Sunday afternoon.
