Default Re: Alex Smith

He is getting better and better. It's clear to me that he hasn't reached his ceiling yet.

I'd rather have his smart style of play than a ****ing Vick or Stafford.

so far he has shown he can play with a lead and a reallly good rb and defense to control the game. but can he lead you to comeback victories or operate a 2 minute drill?

Last year, believe it or not, he lead six comeback drives in the regular season + NO game.

I like Smith. He's not a world beater when you simply look at the skill set that the talking heads have decreed you need to be a successful NFL QB these days. But he's smart, hard nosed, throws well enough, runs a bit, and doesn't try to do too much.

The guy was a championship QB in college. That Utah team was the best in the country and got screwed out of a chance to prove it by the BSECSPN. It's amazing that this far into his career is the first time he's had the same offense in consecutive years. It's nice to see that his perserverance is resulting in good things.

He continues to make throws every week that he used to not make.

There was one throw in particular I think to Davis, he took a 5 step, the pocket was in his face, he stepped up into it and delivered a low hot strike. Perfect placing and perfect pace. The ball beat the defender, and he protected his receiver.

What's been his biggest problem with throwing? Everyone wants to say the deep ball but it's not, that whole cannon arm thing cracks me up, it's nice but not a necessity. He can thrown deep and put it where it needs to be. His biggest problem has been that he throws high a lot. I think it's a problem with his getting set, maybe he's not always comfortable, maybe his footwork is funky, maybe he releases high, idk. But he does sail some balls. To see him set in a collapsing pocket, drive on the throw, and strike it a good 15 or so yards over the middle is new. And it's a real big step.

It all comes with confidence imo. Happy feet = sailing passes.

I think that too. I think early in his career he was not confident in his own abilities. That made him worry about making the bad throw, instead of making the good one.

He got beat up too! Which made for the happiest of feet. Last year he progressed in that area, but it still seems incomplete. Here's hoping that's all it is and not a mechanics thing.

Hate to bump this but what are your thoughts about him now?

Some of you guys wanted to see how he performed without Harbaugh and this year he's proven he can be a very good QB with some below average weapons(Stats don't tell the story)

I think his best years are ahead of him and I envision a Rich Gannon type of finish. Remember he's only 29.

Chiefs just need to sign Maclin and insert him in the slot(Smith does wonders with slot WR's) and go after a more reliable TE.

My thoughts on Smith is the same as it was in 2012.

If you have a good defense & a running game, you will win games with Smith as your QB. If you give Alex Smith Peyton Manning type of responsibilities, expect bad results.

Smith is a game manager, above average QB.

The Chiefs are trying to extend him, and more power to them because he's worth keeping. But with the deals that some QBs have signed lately I wonder what his demands will be. He's no worse than Jay Cutler and slightly younger. Does that mean he has to get 50+ mil guaranteed, a hundred mil, and 17 mil per?

Cutler jacked the market up for average to above average QBs. Smith isn't worth that type of money and I like him. But when Jay Cutler is being paid a total of 52 million+ over the next 3 years well Smith probably deserves a similar type of contract.

Dwayne Bowe is below average? Alex hardly utilized dude. He milked Jamaal Charles so much Charles was the teams leading receiver in yards and catches. Majority of the season he was captain check down.
