Lakers wouldn't use it on Walton, that makes no sense.
You do realize that even if they used an amnesty clause, they would still have the pay Walton... The amnesty clause they are always talking about simply means they can waive a player and have that contract not count against the cap anymore. It has nothing to do with the actual salary payments.
So it's purely a technical salary cap tool. Do the Lakers go under the cap if they waive Walton and use an amnesty clause on his contract? Nope. So it makes no sense to use it and above all: it would make zero difference if they use it.
If mike miller underperforms this season, i can see us using it on him. But i doubt this happens though.
Even subtracting Mike Miller's salary Miami would still presumably be over whatever cap there is. They'll probably spend their mid level on someone like Samuel Dalembert, so they'd have no avenue of replacing Miller except through a minimum deal. Nah, Miami will keep Miller... unless they can trade him.
Ben Gordon: Probably the best option. With Brandon Knight in the mix; it makes since to rid ourselves of Gordon and his contract. As much as I love watching Gordon, he hasn't been the Ben many loved watching in Chicago. He still has plenty of game left but it doesn't make since to keep him anymore. I don't want a sixth man with that type of price-tag and I feel Stuckey's game is a better fit next to Knight then Gordons. I feel like Knight and Gordon are fairly similar.
Charlie Villanueva: The next best option. I think he would be easier to move then Gordon. While most NBA fans don't care for Villanueva, he is still young, offensively talented, and doesn't come with that large of a price tag. Yes, he is still over-paid, but looking around the league it is coming clear that "over-paid" is basically league average for that player. Example: How much is a guy like Amir Johnson making?
Richard Hamilton: I believe he is in the last year of his contract....finally. It almost makes since to hold onto him until the deadline. He will soon be an asset rather a liability.
Jason Maxiell: Another guy who is in the last year of his deal. I will never understand what happened to him, I still think he can help any contender but somehow has found himself at buried on the bench.

Providing the luxury tax framework remains in tact, it makes sense for the Lakers to cut Walton, as they will only have to pay out his salary, not the luxury tax that comes with it.
The Lakers could use the clause on Kobe and still would be over the cap.
I didn't mean they could do it this year, but moving forward they could make plans to be under the cap anytime they want. Say when Griffen or Wall or Drummond is ready to be a free agent.
The Knicks spent 2 years getting under the cap. With amnesty, they could do it at their whim.
