Default Who's Better? Part 3: Wilt Chamberlain vs. Bill Russell

Part 1: http://www.insidehoops.com/forum/sho...d.php?t=241402
Part 2: http://www.insidehoops.com/forum/sho...d.php?t=241545

"Wilt was one of the greatest ever, and we will never see another one like him." Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

"There are two types of superstars. One makes himself look good at the expense of the other guys on the floor. But there's another type who makes the players around him look better than they are, and that's the type Russell was."-Don Nelson

Two great rivals, Wilt was certainly the more talented player individually, but it can be argued that Russell was the greatest team player of all time. As great as Wilt was on defense, Russell is often considered the best defensive player in NBA history. A great leader and the very definition of a "winner", Russell is one of the most respected players in NBA history. Wilt, although often criticized early in his career for being a selfish player concerned more about his own production than winning, matured into a team player later in his career and sacrificed his gaudy offensive numbers to become a team player and help the 76ers and later the Lakers win NBA championships. The two men were fierce rivals during their career, but like Bird and Magic, were close friends off the court. Taking it all into consideration, who do you personally think was a greater player overall? Here are their stats and awards, although I'm sure most of us know a lot of the info I have posted. Blocks and steals are unavailable, but by all accounts both Chamberlain and Russell were brilliant defenders and piled up tons of blocks.

On a serious note, Bill Russell is better

The man who can beat up mountain lions, has a 50 inch vert, has slept with 20,000 woman and can pluck a quarter from the top of the backboard. Also can't forget he was a pro volleyball player and track champion.

This is sort of asking whether a team's success or a player's individual success makes a player better.
The postulation my arguments always eventually hinge on "winning is everything". And in that case, Russell is the better player.

Wilt never fouled out because of individual pride. Russell won more championships than he can wear. Who would you feel more confident playing against?

He won, with the best Laker team of all-time, and gave your team a ring in 6 years against tough competition. Why can't you appreciate a LAKER legend?

Best laker team of alltime? lol
He cost LA 1-2 championships with his horrible freethrow shooting in the clutch and in big games

Team game. No player has ever single handedly won a basketball game, ever.

These topics you make are all played out. They've been discussed a couple dozen times and some since I've signed up on this message board.
