Default Kevin Durant talks about modeling his game after Larry Bird

Interesting and never saw this posted two days ago when it came out. I think it's a brilliant idea for his skillset and very few if any star players I remember have come out and said they modeled their game after the awesome Larry Legend. Surprised more people aren't realizing just how great of a season Durant is having. Clear MVP right now in my book.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports...ility/1748853/

"Larry Bird is a guy I like watching," Durant said. "I watch film on him all the time. I like his approach to the game when he was playing. When I first started playing the game, my Godfather Taras Brown who taught me how to play he always was a Larry Bird guy, always used to look up his stats."

Durant wants to have a Bird-like season in which he shoots 50 percent from the field, 40 percent from three and 90 percent from the free throw line.

"So of course as I got older and started to watch NBATV, Legends games, and of course you here the stories about the rivalries with him and the Lakers and him and Magic, so I like his competitiveness, how low-maintenance he was, how he just went out there and did his job. He played hard. He played for the love of the game, and that's what I've got."

Respect. I think the point on low maintenance is key.

So many divas today.

My favourite bit:

KD on trying to achieve 50-40-90
"That's something I want do, something I'm chasing," he admitted. "That's being efficient, taking good shots, taking what the defense gives you, not forcing…That's what I want to do. I just want to grow in that area."

inb4 volume shooter comparisons.

For That To Happen Durant Must Develop or Take His Rebounding and Passing_Creating to Another Level. Defensively Bird Was a Better Post Defender and Team Defender but They are Similar Shooters, So Thats Something.

I Don`t Think He Will Be Able To Develop Bird`s Passing and Creating Abilities He Is Too Old For That. Other Than That, I Think He Can Improove In Those Other Two Areas Mentioned.

Did he miss the part about Bird's ridiculous court vision and passing ability?

I don't see him emulating that at all.

Yea, lots of similarities (mostly shooting/scoring) at that size/position... but Larry Bird had better bball IQ (maybe best ever at that), Durant will grow in that area im sure....
then he was a better rebounder (hustled more, stronger, battled the bigs), biggest difference is offensive rebounding..... Then he was a better post/team defender...
and last but not least in my book Bird possessed one of the 10 best passing skills/court visions ever, that will be close to impossible to emulate for Durant...

Well, if we're being fair to Durant ...

Court vision, selfless play, feel for the game, and a lot of passing skills are flat out innate abilities that can't be learned.

He didn't mention that, but he did mention about trusting in his teammates more often.

The only thing that he mention about Bird was his efficiency, taking what the defense gives you, and not forcing anything. Basically playing smarter on offense. He wants to join the 50/40/90 club.

I don't think he could emulate his passing and court vision ability. Those are very rare. I don't expect Durant to do that at all.

But from the Thunder fans, I heard his passing has improved and his rebounding improved. He also gives effort on defense. I dunno about his post ability. But Durant is great off the ball and spot up player. So, he is improving.

He'll never be on Bird's level as a passer, that was just god given instincts that cant be taught. But, 20 and 10 on 50/40/90 percentages? Well considering he's 23/24 and nowhere near his prime, entirely possible.

I have news for Durant, Bird wouldn't put up with the sh*t Westbrook does in big games. I remember reading a quote where Bird told Bill Walton to stop shooting around because McHale's shots (he was out with an injury) were going to him.

How did you all interpret that he wants to become Bird 2.0 from this interview? What I understood from his words is that he is trying to improve his efficiency and develop his all around game where he needs to, stuff that he has backed up with his performance so far this season.

Don't forget about developing a great post game, one of the greatest things in Bird's game.

I don't know if he can reach Larry's level but it's a great motto to learn after one of the great ones.

Kevin Durant is shooting above 50/40/90 right now. Let's see if he can keep it up for the rest of the season. That will be pretty impressive.
