Default Kyle Anderson's commitment huge for Howland, UCLA

CBS Sports reports:

You can blame it on underclassmen leaving early or on a recruiting lull.

Or on a combination of the two.

Either way, Ben Howland hasn't tasted a Sweet 16 since he made three consecutive Final Fours from 2006 to 2008, and many had started to wonder about his long-term viability at UCLA. Had his style of play run its course in Los Angeles? Could he still consistently recruit elite-level prospects? Was his hiring of a summer coach from the Atlanta Celtics program a sign that Howland was getting desperate?

Those are the questions basketball people spent July asking each other.

Now a new question must be asked: Is Howland suddenly in position to make a fourth Final Four?

That's how significant Kyle Anderson's commitment to the Bruins was late Monday. Not only did it give Howland a consensus top-five prospect from the Class of 2012, it also quieted critics and suggested UCLA's first season in what will be a renovated Pauley Pavilion could lead to Atlanta's Georgia Dome.

My only concern is what happens if UCLA has a very bad season. The "Fire Howland" crowd only gets riled up sometimes, but the 1 & Done phenomenon he has embraced since their Final Four run has hurt their team.

They're expecting to be good in 2012-2013 with Muhammed, Anderson and possibly a few others for this great recruiting class.

But Howland's really gotta be worried about performing well this season. Last thing he wants is to be fired and have the next "hot shot" coach *coughBradStevenscough* stepping in to keep that recruiting class together and coach his team.

Nah, not yet.

But most think its a 2 horse race between UCLA & Kentucky.

The plus factor for UCLA is Shabazz is an Adidas kid who has "ties" to the company through AAU sponsorships, fits into Howland's system, hes mentioned before he has talked to Kyle about playing together in college, and Shabazz was born in Long Beach.

Kentucky's stale 2012 recruiting makes me think Calipari is headed to the NBA after this season and the recruits feel it. When Alex Poythress mentioned Calipari talked about how important playing for Kentucky is, instead of the emphasis on being a 1 & Done it kinda made me think thats his way to sell them on the school while hes gone.

Shabazz will be a Bruin, him & Kyle Anderson are very tight. Boy will that be an exciting team next year.
