That's why Alex Smith had to drive them all the way down the field in under 2 minutes to win because the Niners defense gave up a 66 yard TD to Jimmy Graham.

Smith has been good at times this year, I don't think he sucks...but there is no question that the 49ers success this year is mainly due to that defense

49ers have a great defense but people need to stop acting like they were the sole reason for beating the Saints. They were getting picked apart by Brees in the second half.

They did, but it wasn't anything near the efficient Brees we've come to expect.

He completed 63% of his passes, way off the 71% mark he set this season and even below his career 66%.

7.3 ypa vs 8.3 on the season and 7.5 career.

One thing that's being overlooked a bit is the way SF took away the NO running game. Jumping out to a big lead helped early in the game, but it was a one possession game for 35:00. Saints managed less than 40 yds on the ground after averaging 133 ypg during the regular season (#6 in the league).

Brees put up 63 passes and 461 yards because they couldn't get them any other way.

I'll be interested to see if SF can erase the NY running game the same way. Eli killed the Packers with play action...absolutely murdered them with it...but I'm not sure the Niners LB bite on that stuff like GB did.

this thread is retarded and the fact that people are actually addressing it as a serious question is almost as retarded. so if alex smith manages to pull out a victory against the giants and make the super bowl, that would validate picking him over someone who has actually won one, who just had the best quarterback season ever and is regarded as the best QB in the league and can be one of the best ever?

The main goal for any team is to win the Super Bowl.

If the 49ers win it all this season and Alex Smith was the starter for 19 of those games then he would have done as much for the 49ers franchise as Aaron Rodgers did for the Packers. And that is winning a Super Bowl.

uhhh...no

in the real world some QBs are more valuable than others...Dilpher didn't do as much for the 2000 Ravens as Montana did for the 1989 49ers

Refresh my memory... Didn't the 49ers force these turnovers through physically dominant defense and ST play? I seem to remember a monster hit by Whitner at the goal line, a well read ball by Goldson, and a stripped ball on special teams that essentially spotted Alex Smith 17 points.

Of course Brees went off. As JMT already posted, the 9ers eliminated the Saints run game as well as Sproles in the return game, and FORCED Brees to throw it 60+ times. Not to mention that Brees was playing catch up the entire game, which always leads to gaudy numbers from a decent QB.

Nobody's acting like the defense was the only reason they won. However it was a very large reason, and had a much more profound impact than "32 points and 450+ yards through the air" implies.

That said, obviously Smith had a good game and a great finish.

If you look at the game, Smith obviously took advantage of the turnovers his defense created in the first quarter and marched the team down the field twice in the last two minutes, but what about in between that time? They only had two drives of 30+ yards and it allowed the Saints to get back into a game that probably should've been well in hand after that first quarter. That time frame has been more indicative of what he's been doing for the year, especially in the red zone.

It's taken Smith 6-7 years to be a slightly above average quarterback. His situation wasn't ideal of course, but I wouldn't say that's worth a number one pick.

My god just when i thought i have seen it all .

After one loss where he played great, Alex Smith is now considered better than him.

I don't think people realize what Rodgers has done this season. To go 15-1 with the worst defense in the nfl is beyond phenomenal.

Worsr defense???

Cmon. Have you seen New England? Even the bottom dwellers like Indy, St. Louis, Carolina, Tampa.....they've got playmakers but they just didn't make plays.

I'm not saying it validates the niners decisions of picking Smith 1st overall, but hey, at least the score would be tied 1-1.
