This quote from Casey makes it seem like the team's staff (front office and coaching staff) is building around someone. Who the fk could we possibly be fkn building around? This is ridiculous.
He even believes Rivers is going to be an excellent player, and almost implies that Rivers will turn out to be the better shooter. We should have taken the best available, and Rivers would have fit that bill.
FML.
EDIT: Oh, silly me! I should have kept reading the story before going off the deep end. Casey answers my query in the next paragraph.
We're building around DeRozan. Howwwww naive of me. DeRozan is definitely the type of player to build around. It's not like Rivers will pretty much absolutely have a far better career than DeRozan, not at all. We should DEFINITELY be building around DeRozan.
look forward to next season and hopefully Ross would prove you wrong by out-performing Rivers

Cheers
He would not prove me wrong by out-performing Rivers for one season. He'll do it if he out-performs Rivers over their respective careers. Rivers has more talent and potential. He will have the better career when it's all said and done.
I am a Raps fan until I die, but Colangelo's track record isn't great. He's had a couple solid picks, and some duds-to-mediocre ones so far. A lot of his FA signings and trades have been questionable at best (Turkoglu?). I'm hoping Val turns out to be everything he's being hyped to be. But when is the end of the line? When do things get better? Are we just destined for mediocrity for eternity?
If the raps do sign nash, which is looking more likely now, there line-up could look something like this.
Nash, Bayless
Ross, Bayless, Derozen
Derozen, JJ Kleiza
Bargs, Davis Kleiza
Val, Amir
Trade bait looks like Jose, as there is no point having both of them on the roster together. Maybe it will be a sign and trade to the suns, where jose can mentor their new point guard.
IF we sign Nash for $15 Million per year
(Frankly I still have a lot of doubt he is coming here)
Jose is obviously the move because his contract expires. Period.
I assume Kleiza is as well. Competent middling player. He signed a 3 -4 year deal as I recall so he has 1or 2 left on salary.
Kleiza and Jose likely make about $15M + between them or close enough....
For $15M + who can you get given you are set at Center (resign Aaron Grey to back up Val)....set at PF - set at SG with Derozan and the draft pick Ross... and set at PG with Nash and Bayliss off the bench....
Philly drafted Iggys replacement.... and got a PF later on.
Ross really isn't a terrible pick.
If he goes 12 in the draft no one says shite.
He goes a few spots high and it is surprising.
Obviously management thought he was a better fit than rivers.
This may be bad reasoning as passing on a potential star for someone you feel can fill a role doesn't sound all that wise long-term.
Definitely will haunt them down the road if rivers turns into a star.
One thing I will say - this was NOT a safe pick.
Rivers would have been the safe pick because we wouldn't be crucifying BC right now. They are taking a gamble on player with a lot of skill. He is the best shooter in the lottery, with very good athleticism, very good size and very good potential defence.
I feel like the defensive side was probably what tipped the scales as Rivers doesn't usually exert himself on that end. Rivers also would have been trouble when he didn't get any minutes. Ross will be more patient.
On reflection I have gotten over passing on Drummond because I think he looks like a real bust. With a ceiling of Deandre Jordan I'm not that impressed. I am still really pissed we couldn't manage to lose one more game because we would have barnes right now.
I have no problem taking Ross over Drummond or Lamb, but passing on Rivers may be a big mistake.
Edit: As for Acy vs. Miller
Miller makes no sense with Ross already drafted. Acy will be a good role player/energy guy. Miller will be in a euroleague 2 years down the road.
If the raps do sign nash, which is looking more likely now, there line-up could look something like this.
Nash, Bayless
Ross, Bayless, Derozen
Derozen, jj/kleiza
Bargs, davis jj/ kleiza

If they get Nash they will definitely try to move Calderon. They just extended a qualifying offer to Bayless which actually hurts their cap space so I wouldn't be surprised if they amnesty Jose in advance of free agency.
Bayless really loves Toronto.
“Honestly, I’m going to be here no matter what, I’m looking to buy a place,” Bayless said Thursday before making an appearance at Raptors draft party. “If I’m not here (as a player), I’m still going to be here during the summertime.”
But I think your lineup is off. Ross won't start in his first year at all. Derozan will stay at the 2.
Ross was not my preference but is not a crazy stretch at 8. I would have preferred we drafted Drummond and then swapped him for a later pick to take Ross and gain more assets but it is what it is.
BC and Casey looked disappointed in their post draft interviews. I think they were really hoping for Waiters, Lilliard or Barnes. In the end though, this pick seems more like a Casey pick than a BC pick to me.
I'll withhold judgement on the pick until I see what the Raps do with FA. I'm a big supporter of bringing Nash to TO. Forget that he is CDN, there is no better player to have on a team of young guys to help them grow.
Ross also seems like a good kid and he does bring some things to the table that will help this squad so welcome to TO Mr. Ross!
Toronto clearly went with the guy who they thought was the best on the board. Ross has so many NBA qualities that it's easy to understand how they could pass on Austin Rivers. Ross was one of our favorite players and could become the top SG from this year's class. He should turn out to be an excellent pick for the Raptors, blending with Demar Derozan at the 2/3 positions. Quincy Acy also has a lot of likeable qualities with a high motor and a huge wingspan.
