We have seen the best of Alex Smith this season, and it's not good enough for a team in the 49ers position IMO

Who said he couldn't improve even more? Every player has a chance to be the best they can be. The good thing for Alex is that he can work more on his weaknesses in the offseason. Don't say that he can't be better because he can. Anyone can

He still has limited help outside VD it's putrid. Crabtree who is a borderline starting WR MAYBE as a #2 WR on teams. Then you have Kyle Williams and Brett Swain that's downright pathetic and we all know Ted Ginn ain't a WR. Alex Smith performed very well considering the circumstances if they can get him another legit weapon or two he could get better (atleast statistically speaking).

good. carlos rogers is officially victor cruz's b*tch so i wouldnt have it any other way

actually i expect the 49ers to have at least 10 wins for the next 2-3 years and make the playoffs

I'm not stating that as absolute fact. Just from my own senses and experiences watching the guy from draft day. Maybe his numbers will soar after getting another wideout opposite Crabtree.

He had a great season considering all the malign things said about him previously. I just don't view him as a focal point of a Super Bowl winning team

They need to get receivers and find a good qb....also some key players on dee are free agents.

Crabtree is quickly becoming a bust.. He doesn't have good speed and doesn't get any seperation, and when he does he drops the ball(see New Orleans game) At the moment he is no more then a possesion reciever with diva issues always whining about not getting the ball. I think Williams is a better wideout then Crabs. Our best reciever(morgan) got hurt early in the season and Edwards got cut during the season, 2 of our top recievers coming in to the season gone like that..

Smith's only legit targets this postseason was Davis, Walker(1 game), Gore and to an extent Kyle Williams. 49ers need to go after an explosive reciever this offseason and get depth. We just need solid players who can fit in the system.

Looks like the potential for a 9-7 season to me.

They had a great season, but I wouldn't get too caught up in the notion that a team that got lightning in a bottle and jumped from 6 to 13 wins is going to come close to repeating that success. Somewhere right in the middle seems more realistic.

Both Arizona, who closed the second half well (including a win over SF) and St Louis should be much improved. Seattle has .500 talent.

I don't expect STL to be a threat or SEA much but if AZ picks up a Peyton Manning and he is healthy they would battle the 49ers big time for that division title.

With what they should be able to add through the draft...or by dealing that pick...and some decent luck on the injury front, St Louis should become good enough to win some division home games. That's where it starts. Much of that, of course, comes down to whether Bradford can really play, or whether his last 10 starts are indicative of what to expect.

I don't think AZ needs Manning to battle for that division. Skelton will win the job from Kolb, and I like his upside much better than I do Smith's. That team has some talent, and was a victim of the bad combination of the most new faces in the NFC + no OTA's + a short camp.

Seattle's a team that's gone 7-9 the last two seasons. Hard to write them off.

If the more difficult schedule results in a 9 win season for the Niners, that will be a hotly contested division imo.

Is the NFC West set up the same way scheduling wise??

Like you visit Arizona and St. Louis or San Fran and Seattle every 6 years (for NFC teams). So basically you can't play at Arizona and Seattle in one year anymore.

THEY'RE IN THE WORST DIVISION IN FOOTBALL.

Can't write the Seahawks off because they went 7-9? That's not a good record. They also have Tavaris Jackson as a quarterback. Enough said.

The only team that can really challenge them is STL because Bradford has a chance to be a really great quarterback.

So long as the defense plays at that level they'll be alright. And Alex still has room to grow, the notion that he doesn't is ridiculous. It's not like he lacks the talent, because again we've seen it. He needs to work in the off season on his consistency, I'd like to see him thrown more on the move over the next few months because that's still a glaring weakness.

Outside help on both sides of the ball CB, and WR. I'd also like to see the coaches really work hard this off season to get everyone up to speed.

This is an offensive system that takes time to perfect. What they've done in one year is incredible. I expect a bit of a drop off next season, but no one wants to see this team on their schedule. Get to the tourney, we'll go from there.

Oh one more thing would be a vet. QB. I like Alex, tough guy, but he has his history of injury and like you saw, he will take off so... he's getting better at sliding but still.

yep...everyone thought Alex Smith was a bust...most thought the 9ers were idiots giving him another shot

this year the Bengals were projected to be the worst team in the NFL...they are in argueably the hardest division

you can't write ANY team off in the NFL

-Rams
-Seahawks
-Cardinals

^^^ it is very likely that one of those teams will shock people and be contendors
