Default Commentary on Carmelo Anthony's struggles in NY

Palm Beach Post:

Anthony has never shot so poorly, especially from outside 15 feet, his struggles so acute that he vowed to improve his selection. Then he went 0-for-7 in a rout of Charlotte (the Knicks' only win in eight games) and 5-for-14 in Wednesday's loss to Cleveland.

Even if his stroke returns, that doesn't mean the Knicks are equipped to make a deep post-season run. This isn't as simple as continuity and chemistry, as it was for the Heat during its slow start last season, or as it was for a 1999 Knicks team that was trying to integrate Latrell Sprewell and Marcus Camby.

Start here: Anthony doesn't fit.

Seven seconds or less? That's what Mike D'Antoni's break-neck attack was called in Phoenix. Seven seconds or more is now the length of time that Anthony, in isolation, will dribble or hold the ball. While it is true that LeBron James does this, too, James at least is a gifted enough passer to sometimes make something out of all that nothing. He had more assists halfway through his fourth season than Anthony has had in his nine-season career.

Further, Anthony's presence has hurt, rather than helped, Amare Stoudemire. He was unhappy in Phoenix because he wasn't the central figure. But he was the king of New York, getting attention, touches and even MVP mention. Then Anthony arrived.

I never got that Amar'e was unhappy in Pheonix. They just didn't want to pay him the same years.

Melo's definitely not on LeBron's level though.

Huh? Amare was very unhappy in PHX. He was just classy about it. People forget that they used to try and trade him every year. In fact, part of what led to Cleveland's demise was Amare. They had a chance to trade for Amare and they didn't because they didn't want to give up JJ Hickson (who is no longer with the team btw). Instead they got Antawn Jamison.

Saying Melo and Amare don't fit is a convenient, cop out excuse. Bottom line is, we have poor coaching and no point guard play. As selfish as everyone claims Melo is, I believe he's our leader in assists. If you have the opportunity to coach 2 of the best players in the game, you're supposed to seize that opportunity. Neither Melo or Amare appear to be malcontents. They aren't really the same type of player. They're more than cordial off the court. If you can't make a top 5 PF and a top 3 SF fit, then it's YOUR fault. And by YOUR, I mean Mike Antoni (No D)

D'Antoni is gonna be the first coach that keeps Carmelo Anthony out of the playoffs.

I guess you're right. I never remembered any complaining. I bet he wishes he was back there now.

I don't buy it. He's averaging, like 4 assists. Hardly Larry Bird or LeBron territory.

But I'm obviously quite biased. On top of it being a bad fit, I think Melo is severely overrated (not that that's his fault) and a bad team mate. I don't see him ever being a major factor in an NBA Championship.

Scoooter, so we can get this out in the air.......

Where do you rank Melo, player-wise?

And which players would you put in front of him?

I've never you asked this, but would like to know.

I don't know. I get bored ranking players past, like, the first 2 or 3.

I'd say he's the fourth best SF in the league. Obviously he's playing worse than that right now, but he's obviously not performing up to his usual snuff at the moment.

I'm sure you could put a top 10 list together.

Do you think Melo is top 10?

Who are the three SF's you'd put in front of Melo? LeBron is a given.

After Lebron and Durant, who do you have as the third best SF?

Honestly, I'm like that in everything. I might have ADD. I'll get like, LeBron, Dwight, Durant... and then I'll want to go watch a movie or something.

There arent many top SF's in the league...

LBJ, Durant, Paul Pierce, Iggy, Rudy G, Granger, Wallace, Gallo, Deng, Ariza, Hedo...

There are 4 names on there I would take ahead of Melo personally.
