Default Pats cut Tiquan Underwood the eve of the Super Bowl

Really?

Pats cut Tiquan Underwood

INDIANAPOLIS -- The New England Patriots made their final transaction of the 2011 season on Saturday, releasing wide receiver Tiquan Underwood and promoting defensive lineman Alex Silvestro from the practice squad.

The transaction was not due to disciplinary reasons, a source told ESPNBoston.com's Mike Reiss.

Underwood, who had three catches in five games this season, tweeted: "Good Luck To The New England Organization, The Coaches, & All My Teammates... #PatsNation"

With Underwood out, wide receiver Chad Ochocinco will likely be active for Super Bowl XLVI, a source told ESPN's Ed Werder. Ochocinco had a career-low 15 catches in his first season with the Patriots and was inactive for the AFC Championship Game against the Baltimore Ravens two weeks ago. He's never played in the Super Bowl.

New England's other wide receivers are Wes Welker, Deion Branch, Julian Edelman and Matthew Slater.

For Silvestro, an undrafted rookie from Rutgers, it is his second stint on the Patriots' 53-man roster this season. He adds depth along the defensive line, although defensive tackle Kyle Love (ankle) was the only defensive lineman on Friday's final injury report. Silvestro's promotion means that he will likely be active for Super Bowl XLVI, and he could be part of a defensive line rotation in the game, which is the first indoor game since the preseason for the Patriots.

Yeah, you feel bad but you don't know what he did. If its small, then i feel bad, but you'd think its not small considering the timing.

That's kind of mean if he really didn't do anything wrong. There's got to be something we're not hearing. Belichick is ruthless but there's always a reason.

According to the Boston Herald, the move has no disciplinary motive behind it. The Patriots simply wanted another defensive lineman on the roster. Alex Silvestro (ironically, like Underwood, a Rutgers product) is the guy who will take his place. He's been on the Patriots practice squad all season.

Good job Belid!ck

I just head that he will still receive the SB bonus and ring if they win, so it's not that bad..

They said that the Pats wanted another special team player to replace Gronk on ST. Underwood wasn't going to be active I think so belichick is replacing a player who won't play with one that will. Smart move?

That sounds respectable. Hope he gets to sit/stand on the sideline as well.

per espn.com

Quote:
Underwood will be entitled to $88,000 if New England wins this game and $44,000 if New England loses. The NFL's collective bargaining has a clause that says any player active for a total of eight games in the regular season and postseason is entitled to a full share of the Super Bowl earnings. Underwood just made the cut, as he was active for eight games. He would also get a ring if the Patriots win.

Hate to see something good happen to one of my fellow Rutgers guys at the expense of another Scarlet Knight.

At least Underwood is still eligible for a ring and playoff cash.
