Too young to make any kind of rational observation on guys like Unitas - can anyone shed light on why he's ranked so high (along with some of the other old-timers?) Is it mostly because of legacy reasons? Or were they actually that talented as well - i.e. you put them in today's league and they would be superstar QBs...

Statistically average in almost every category, and was carried to his two SB wins by Terrell Davis. I don't have anything against Elway but I always wondered why people thought he was so great. Not saying he sucked or anything either, but I feel like a lot of people think he's a top 3 QB of all time, or even the best.

I dont get that. Joe Montana won most of his SBs with superior talent on both sides of the ball. His first SB he was average. The FG was putting pts on the board. Joe didnt even hit 200yds that SB. Why is it Joe gets all the credit for winning SBs, and Terrell Davis gets all the credit for Elway winning?

Joe did have superior talent, and yea that first SB was average. But he bested a record-setting Dan Marino, led that famous drive against Cincy, then absolutely murdered the Broncos with one of the best performances in SB history.

IIRC, Elway struggled mightily in that one. And after that, he never really went anywhere with the Broncos until TD arrived. I remember during the 94-95 season when Young and the niners were sh*tting on everyone, including the Broncos, and those Broncos were just another random sub-par team. Can't blame Elway for his inferior talent, but it wasn't THAT bad was it?

Not a popular answer, but I gotta go with Dan Marino.

I view Super Bowl wins moreso as a team accomplishment. It's not Marino's fault that their running attack and defense was uneven during his tenure.

Would someone else have won super bowls at the helm of that team? I doubt it.

Rightfully so, we place a lot of stock in how many rings guys are winning, but sometimes, I think it's TOO much stock. Trent Dilfer and Brad Johnson have rings, too.

yup agree with this logic. Thatís why I got Manning at 1 and Iíd probably put Marino at 2

I'd agree with that if Marino didn't severely play below his standards in the playoffs. He wasn't holding up his end of the bargain, in fact he was a pretty big reason why the team lost in the playoffs, and of course the defense giving up lots of points.

It wasn't his fault the their defense gave up a lot of points, but he has to be held accountable for playing below average.

I know quarterback rating has its flaws, for sure, but nobody has a career 77 rating in the playoffs and plays well.

I used to think John Elway was a top 5 QB but looking at his stats they are pretty damn ugly.. I mean extremely subpar QB ratings(in the 70's), bad TD/INT ratio not to mention only throwing over 4000 yards once in his career. I understand he did play in a different era where the QB position was much tougher to play and was more confined to being a game manager but he just isn't top 3 (not ahead of Montana, Manning, Brady) Eventually Rodgers and Brees will probably over take him..

I'm excluding the older QB's(Unitas, Bradshaw, etc)
1) Montana
2) Brady
3) Peyton Manning
4) Marino
5) Favre

Marino has the knock of never wanting to hand the ball off...I've heard this knock several times

can anyone name one RB that Marino played with?...some think that isn't because he never had a good RB, it is because he refused to hand off the ball and the caoch was OK with it.

I heard of this many times in the 90s when some would say "IF MARINO PLAYED ON THE 90S COWBOYS THEN HE WOULD HAVE 100 RINGS!!!"...then many with reply to those by saying "If Marino was on the 90s Cowboys team no one would ever know who Emmitt Smith was"

Not sure how much stock to put into that, but the rumor is there, and likely exists for a reason.

I'm not sure. I was too young to see Montana play and I saw Steve Young towards the tail end of his career. Off of stats, video footage, live games watched and other sources, my list would go something like this:

1) Joe Montana

2) Tom Brady
3) Peyton Manning (Could move ahead of Brady, I feel these two are tossups)
4) John Elway

5) Steve Young or Dan Marino

I understand it's a team game. But all QB's are a product of their teams. Yet they get all this credit when a team wins.

So to be fair they should get just as much blame going the other way. It's supposedly the most important position on the field. And we label the greats as those who have taken their team to the promised land.

Marino wasn't great in the playoffs. His regular season success didn't translate. If that happens you will not be considered along with guys who have in fact performed well and led teams to titles. That's the way I see it.

My second "greatest" quarterback is Tom Brady. Hard to argue his accomplishments individually and from a team stand point.

Asking a bunch of teens and 20 yr olds this question is tough.... Crossing generations in a non-stat historical league (unlike baseball) its truly tough. Its all subjective.

I will give you my top 10 and brees and rodgers aint there...

Unitas, Moon, Young, Warner, Montana, Brady, Peyton, Elway, Young, Marino

Then you got Farve, Tarketon, Staubach, Bradshaw...

Just to give you perspective the only 2 guys I never saw play was Unitas and Fran.
