the correct answer is Jim Brown...Barry wasn't an every down back, he couldn't run short yardage or even hit a hole at all.

the common fan will say Barry though CAUSE HIS HIGHLIGHTS ARE SO SICK MAN!!!...smh

What are your thoughts about them having nearly the same YPC? Jim Brown 5.2 to Barry's 5? Barry beating him in receptions/receiving yards. Jim Brown also doubled him in fumble count.

The only reason I'm siding with Barry here is that Jim Brown didn't really have to go against the monsters we have today. I'd like to see him go against the Steel Curtain twice a year in the '70s and see how he fared.

The athletes in the past twenty or thirty years are just at a different level. The average DT weight back in Jim Browns era is probably the average weight of todays average MLB.

Can't deny the fact that Brown was the ultimate every down back though-- extremely durable.

Prime Emmitt Smith.

It amazes how many people exclude Emmitt, the man with more yards, TD's, rings than either back being debated. Furthermore what irritates me is if we were inthe basketball thread discussing the best ever the first thing that usually comes up is how many rings does the player have or when discussing QB's the same ring discussion begins but when it comes to RB's for some reason it is conveniently pushed to the side as an afterthought. Well let's make sure to include that in the discussion of RB's also.

Sanders was the most exciting RB I've ever seen play at either the college or pro level. I've never witnessed anything remotely close.

But if I need to win a game, give me Jim Brown.

Partial to the guy that can get me 30 yds once in a while, but can always get me 3.

Barry Sanders.

If he got to play in a traditional offense for his entire career, this would not even be close to a question.

Barry had a really high YPC cause he was benched on short yardage plays and in the redzone.

Jim Brown played 9 years and had 106 TDs (the thing that wins games)

Barry played 10 years and only had 99 TDs

why is that?...because Barry couldn't play redzone...or hit a hole

Barry likey would have owned the yardage record had he never retired...but he NEVER EVER EVER would have sniffed Emmitt's 164 TDs...because he couldn't pound it like Emmitt

I just don't see Jim Brown replicating those numbers if he played when Barry Sanders did... and if Barry played back then, good lord.

Brown didn't have to worry about running against the people Barry did. The size and speed of the game is so much more intense from Barry's era in comparison to the late 50's/60's.

Had he played for Dallas, he would have smashed Jerry Rice's record. I mean the guy scored 39 in one season of college.

wrong had he played for Dallas he STILL would have run around the holes, that was just his style...he didn't do good running through holes, only when he bounced around them.

and he likely still would have retired because he didn't have much love for the game...

he still would have been benched in the redzone too and replaced with a pounder

Watch his college highlights. Most of his runs are up the middle following his blocks. He then made about 3-4 would be tacklers miss after using the block.

The only reason he bounced out in the NFL is because he played in a run n shoot offense, and was forced to because he lacked blockers.

even he would admitt that he doesn't hit holes well...

dispite what people think about him playing behind a bad line, he ran behind two probowl linemen, and a strong passing game that opened up the feild for him with Brett Perriman and Herman Moore

Barry's grass numbers are also very poor compared to his turf numbers, he couldn't do his fancy cuts on grass.

The linemen were decent, but he didn't always play with a TE nor FB. That's the reason he was running to the outside all the time. Watch the college highlights. He follows his blocks there.

You think he got to the NFL and said "F-ck this, I'm doing my own thing!"?
