Default NBA 2K12: General Discussion

NBA 2K12 is coming....

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/117/1176247p1.html

I really hope they added some more moves, and take out the sloppy cross-overs.. they said they took out the street type crossovers because it was unrealistic.. but all they did was made it more sloppy.

But anyways, discuss.

Default Re: NBA 2k12 Discussion

2k11 is a fun game but there was so much wrong with it.

For 2k12 I hope they fix:

1. Morphing/Ball Tangibility - I get so sick of playing great defense and the cpu just shooting or passing the ball through my players and scoring or drawing a foul. I know it can't be completely eliminated, but the ball should at least be tangible 99% of the time. I can't count how many times even in My Player where I've played great defense on a guy, he shoots the ball through my hand, makes a shot and I get can "Allow Man To Score". it's so frustrating.

Translation Of Difficulty

2k still hasn't learned how to correctly translate difficulty. They feel they have to cheat you to challenge you.

2. AI
2a. - The My Player AI is TERRIBLE. You have to be a one man army for your team to win. I play SG for the Bulls. I shouldn't have to average 30/8/8+ playing with Rose, Deng, Boozer and Noah. Rose can't score to save his life and he never makes open 3's although he loves to shoot them. Deng chucks as soon as he gets the ball. He will not pass the ball no matter the situation. If there are 2 people on him he will still shoot it. Boozer and Noah are the only reliable teammates, Noah more so than Boozer. They run the same plays over and over for Deng or Boozer, even if they don't work. Rose never gets plays called for himself. And despite me being Top 5 in the NBA in scoring, leading the team in scoring and shooting almost 60% from the field, they NEVER run plays for me. I've literally had 1 play called for me in 2 straight seasons with the Bulls. They also don't play transition defense. My teammates will never contest the cpu's shots on a fast break. They will just move out of the way. They also won't run with me on a fast break when we have numbers. They always stop at the 3 point line.

2b. - The AI in general in horrible. In Association, your players never run fast breaks. They always fade out and stop at the wings. When they do run to the basket, they fade all the way out first so that when they do get to the rim the cpu is already in position to defend them. They are also oblivious on defense in transition. I had a situation where the other team was trying to run a fast break, but we were back in time. Nicolas Batum (who's a good defender) was in position to stop Kevin Martin from getting to the basket. But instead, Batum decides to run back towards the offense to give Kevin Martin a clear lane to the basket. Martin gets the pass, and he scores.

I could mention a lot of other things but I'll step off of my soap box for now

Yeah I think they are trying to milk this whole "legend" thing. I felt they tried to do that to an extent with 2k11, just trying to sell the game because Jordan was in it. Personally, I don't give a f*ck if legends are in the game or not. Jordan Challenges, MJ: Become A Legend. I don't care about any of that. I just want good presentation (which we always get with 2k) but more importantly, good gameplay.

2k11 is much better than 2k10, but there are still LOTS of problems that go unaddressed each year. The online is still horrible, the translation of difficulty is still bad, there is still ball morphing, and other glitches in the game. I wish they would really fix some of these issues.

NBA's Greatest Join the Roster in NBA 2K12
You thought Michael Jordan was big? Check this out.
US, August 3, 2011

by Jack DeVries

Last year, 2K Sports brought the greatest basketball player of all time back to video games. So how do you top that? By bringing all his friends, rivals, and predecessors to the game, too.

2K announced today NBA 2K12's new game mode, NBA's Greatest, which allows players to control some of the best basketball players the world has ever seen. Fans can relive 15 historic games that showcase some of the sport's best.

Players announced so far are: Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Julius "Dr. J" Erving, plus 10 other legends to be announced in the coming weeks. The historic games feature the entire team rosters, accurate stadiums, and are presented to look like TV broadcasts from their respective era.

To add icing to the cake, the classic teams can be unlocked and played in game against contemporary lineups. Kobe vs. Kareem. Dr. J vs. KG. Jordan vs. Lebron.

"There's the age old debate how players and teams from today would compare with teams of yesterday," said Jason Argent, vice president of marketing for 2K Sports. "We want to settle that debate."

2K Sports also wants to hear from fans. The games aren't fully locked down for NBA's Greatest. So which single game encapsulates Larry Bird's career? Or Dr. J's? Which other players from NBA's past are you dying to play as? Hit us up in the comments below, and start the debate.

nice! new legends joining jordan/mj/bird. cant wait to sky hook dat shiet up
but i really wanna hear about improved gameplay, ai, new association improvements, and how about a my player revamp

Agree with everything above, MyPlayer has potential to be fun as hell but it's honestly a joke. It was fun before the patch where they forced you to run plays, even though it was pretty unrealistic but the patch seriously just ruined it. It just pisses me off how your team always runs the same play even when it results in a horrible shot. I think 2K12 should have a combination of both plays and freelance offense, but make the plays more varied and just fix the damn AI because it is horrible.

Here's some of my opinions:

1. Rebounding. I don't know if it's just me because I've never heard anyone complain about it, but does anyone get annoyed by the rebounding in this game? What I mean is sometimes I'll have my player in perfect position to rebound and press the rebound button, and the dumbass players jump with their hands up and barely miss grabbing the ball because they don't move their arms so I honestly think 2k12 needs dynamic elbows or shoulders so players can actually move their arms to grab rebounds

2. Passing. I liked how they made passing more difficult this year, but some of it is just honestly BS how the defenders just stick their arms out when they're not even looking at the ball. Passing should be more difficult, but make it reasonable at least. They should also add passing control, because a lot of this BS might have not happened if i could choose to throw a lob pass or bounce pass.

3. From my understanding, holding L1 is supposed to start a pick and roll. I get a good screen a lot of the time, but the screener never rolls which makes it pointless.

There's tons of other crap I can't think of at the moment that have made me want to throw 2K11 out of the window. I've pretty much purchased NBA2K every year it's come out on release day, but I'm either skipping 2K12 or waiting a long ass time to see what they messed up before I get it. Maybe Elite will put out a good product, my trust in 2K has diminished after the past couple years.

I used to care about fancy presentation but I honestly don't give a shit anymore about it. Either 2K12 has realistic and fair gameplay, or no 2k12 for me.

I would surely agree that 2K11 could use gameplay improvements. But to be perfectly honest, I'm not sure which sports game has ever not needed them. Through the years, they have earned my trust. There was a time where it seemed to be a bowl of mystery as to how 2K would transition from one year to another (thinking of the shift from a simulation 2K3 to an arcade "ball with vapor trail" ESPN NBA Basketball 2004). But for the most part, on the next generation of systems, I have always been satisfied with each new edition. I felt 2K11 was their best to date.

Also, I respect that you personally don't care if legends are in the game. However, there are a lot of folks who do. I do not find the addition of classic teams to be something that can be milked. Rather, I feel they are completely legitimate additions that all sports games should include. 2K11's classic teams may have honestly doubled the game's replay value for me. I love the current NBA, but man, it's a totally awesome experience to use teams like the '96 Sonics and '90 Pistons. And the Jordan Challenge itself was one of the best video game experiences I've had.

So it is my feeling that classic teams and their challenges are not gimmicky, but instead help turn an awesome NBA game into a potentially legendary one. I don't think such a feature is simply a way to draw in consumers. Instead, I think it's a necessary and satisfying progression in basketball video gaming. As people have said, gameplay people work on gameplay all year. They don't have a lot to do with these legendary additions.

I used to care about fancy presentation but I honestly don't give a shit anymore about it. Either 2K12 has realistic and fair gameplay, or no 2k12 for me.

I agree with all of this. The rebounding is a joke. I have both Marc Gasol and Paul Millsap on my team and I'm lucky if they get at least 4 rebounds each. I hate when I have control of Gasol and I will jump for a rebound, but because he doesn't jump for the ball and just jumps straight up, the ball bounces off of his chest and the other team gets the ball back. We rarely even get more than 35 rebounds in a game, despite me playing a slow, halfcourt offense and holding the other team to a horrible shooting percentage. I played a game where the other team had more offensive rebounds than we did total rebounds. I know some of that is 2K trying to challenge me but it gets annoying.

The passing is bad at times too. Have you ever noticed how the CPU can always seem to execute a perfect bounce pass or whatever pass is necessary for the situation? Like on a fast break they will deliver a perfect bounce pass but we will have to do a chest pass. I wish we could have some sort of user controlled passing. I get tired of trying to pass the ball into the post, then having the guy who is guarding the ball have enough time to back all the way up and tip the pass because the ball acted like it had a parachute on it and traveled in slow motion. We should have it like it is in Madden where if you hold the pass button you do a bullet pass and if you tap the button you do a lob pass.

And as far as pick and rolls, a lot of times it is bad. The screener won't roll to the basket even when there is a clear lane for him to drive. This makes me angry with guys like Amar'e who thrive off of high pick and rolls to dive to the basket. It's really tough in My Player because you can't control what the CPU does.

I think it's because you're holding the pick button for too long.

Offensive rebounds are always way off vs. the CPU unless you use custom sliders.

It's weird...a lot of the times I'll tell my man to jump for a defensive board and he jumps with his arms facing straight upwards, only to have the ball be falling slightly in front of him but he won't move his arms to grab the ball. This usually results in an offensive board for the other team + a putback

Well in my Bulls association the rebounds are way off. But in my Knicks association Amar'e is grabbing 9+ boards a game and Melo is getting at least 7

It's weird. I use the same slider sets for both associations but I get different results
