I mean, there really isn't too much that anyone can do that is new. I don't consider jumping over the hood of a Kia, new. It's just a gimmick.

This sounds horrible.

Especially that new format, wtf...

I don't see why one of DeRozan, McGee, or Ibaka isn't included.

Real stars just don't do it any more. I don't know why, one of those things about the NBA's culture you have to be in the locker room to understand.

Too bad he's in the D League. When I saw this mix I was sold.

One round? Three dunks a piece? Complete fan vote?

That literally sounds like a joke. As in, "Geez, at this rate, by next year there's only going to be one round and they're going to take out judges altogether." And then people have a laugh and someone else sums things up by saying, "Hah, yeah, thankfully the NBA's not that retarded."

I know every year there's the group who feels like the dunk contest is dying. My question is, why would the NBA kill it?

That was actually the sorriest attempt to do an impressive dunk of Griffin's career. Clearly a commercial, made me wonder if it was all just rigged. I'm going to do something rare: Give credit to Vince Carter. The NBA needs a guy like him with insane talent to come along again and impress. Athletic non-NBA players put out vids of tricks all the time.

Great.... as i said... dunk contest is dead...

None of these players have any significant hops required to do something creative and they are all two legged jumpers, so we gona see just some random windmills, alleyoops, from close the rim... some typical ingame dunks..

Gotta be honest... not impressed by this field. Well, Paul George, absolutely impressed, but the rest... I dunno. Budinger gets up, but can he do anything interesting? Never seen anything special from him in a game. Derrick Williams and Iman Shumpert can jump too, but are they dunk contest material? Maybe they are and I just don't know. I wanted to see Jeremy Evans from the Jazz.

So Shumpert wins and all of the media run over to Lin?

They put Shumpert in the dunk contest, but not the Rookie Game? That's kind of insulting. I've never seen one spectacular dunk from him.

WTF?

EDIT: Oh, Lin's involved? Now it makes sense. This whole thing is retarded. Why not just add Lin to Rookie game? What's the big deal? The whole game is just a showcase anyway.........

Yep. I'm in full agreement. The reason guys like Vince Carter, Julius Erving and Dominique Wilkins are special (in regards to dunking) is because they're rare and they're able to introduce a new wave and/or new style of dunking. To expect those types of dunkers to pop up every year would be shortsighted.

With that said, even when those types of dunkers aren't involved, I think the dunk contest most often remains entertaining. Harold Miner wasn't revolutionary, but he was enjoyable. Ditto J.R. Rider. Speaking of J.R., he helps reaffirm my point about new styles that can be introduced. Orlando Woolridge first pulled off the between the legs dunk in the mid-80's. Technically it was a good dunk but aesthetically, it was light years behind Rider's finish in 1994. However, due to Rider's stylistic ability, he often takes the credit for the between-the-legs flush.

So, not only are there technical dunks yet to be completed in the dunk contest, there's also room for players to complete dunks with a style unseen. For instance, if Paul George were to have completed this Vince Carter reverse 360 first (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDviSeP3YZ4#t=0m5s) do you think his style would have received the same fanfare as Vince's finish? Likely not. There's more wrinkles to dunking than a lot of the critics would like to give credit for. People have been saying we're out of dunks to do since 1996.

Pretty much what I am envisioning.

The inclusion of Lin was enough, NBA... you didn't have to change the whole format so he automatically wins. If I'm Paul George I walk out there and shoot three casual layups. What a f@cking joke.
