I just don't see how a company as media-savvy as ESPN, the #1 sports-media company in the country, probably even the planet, could go out and use that phrase talking about a man of Chinese decent intentionally. I won't say it's impossible but that's just mind-blowing. This kind of controversy is the last thing they'd want. To purposefully offend people like that in the current ultra-pc age almost strikes me as impossibly stupid. This isn't some small-town paper in a Confederate state, this is ESPN.

Are you kidding me? How can ESPN be that stupid.

I don't even wanna know what would've happened had that been a racial slur directed at an African American.

Remember 3 years ago when ESPN had the headline, "Kobe Playing Like a Lazy Ass N*gger"? I mean, I don't think that was intentional.......just a common phrase.

a crack, cleft, or fissure: a ***** in a wall.
2.
a narrow opening: a ***** between two buildings.
verb (used with object)
3.
to fill up ****** in.

So now insidehoops blocks out actual english words because it has a secondary meaning?

Holy Shit!! I just heard about this.

LOLOL that is ridiculous. What kind of idiot doesn't realize that Ch*nk is a negative term?

Oh well, ESPN has no competition though so it won't be hurt by this.

Not a big deal. It shows how racist everyone is by taking a common phrase and making it about race.

It's not just that guy who said it once while in the middle of that live interview with Walt Frazier.

ESPN actually used this as a headline to an article of theirs on their mobile website.

But my thought here, and I understand it's just my opinion, is that this is pretty inexcusable given that ESPN.com is a huge platform with a lot of built in processes, people involved, and higher standards.

The usage of this very common saying is not racist itself if you just go with its surface meaning.

However, the worst racial slur you could call someone of Chinese or Asian descent would be "*****" and while it has dual definitions unlike most other slurs, it's just all too convenient that it shows up here. At face value, the headline certainly makes sense. But the dual definition of that word essentially ensures that if published, their would be a shit storm. Now there is.

So either way you look at it, it's wrong and it reminds me of a famous scene in Casino when Robert De Niro defends the firing of one his casino managers after he failed to realize that slot machines were rigged for big payouts that occurred multiple times before he thought anything of it.

De Niro says, "Look, he was either in on it, or he was too dumb to recognize it. Either way, I can't have him working for me"

.......

I have my own ideas about why the group won't say ANYTHING about this headline.....even after (rightfully) forcing an apology from whitlock within hours of his comments.

Doubt that ish posters who back Lin will be as vocal about this as they were about whitlock's comments.

Reasons are one in the same.

Yup, perfect post.

The ESPN people who came up with the article headline and let it go through are either racist and making a joke, or they were too dumb to realize that you are not allowed to have a headline saying ch*nk in it. I don't know which one is better.

there is no way that was an honest mistake...

an asian kid losing for the first time and you make a title
"***** in the armor"
common sense will tell you that you shouldnt do that, that bad things will happen.

if it was for a regular game, then go ahead and use it, but not in a game that is all about an asian-american kid.
