Zen Master/Crater face is the right choice here.

Red Auerbach.

Not only did he have great success as a coach and general manager, but he was also arguably the greatest judge of talent ever. His draft choices were generally first class.

Who did Phil Jackson draft?

Phil Jackson was a HC, not a GM

Back when Red was around, there were like 8 teams

I would have Phil Jackson/Larry Brown

Triangle offense with Larry Brown's defensive rotations?

It's been a long day, thanks for pointing out my stupid comment about Jackson. Still, the point I was inferring was that Jackson got a little lucky, didn't he? How many people had the luxury of taking over teams stacked with superstars such as Jordan, Pippen, Shaq and Kobe? Jackson played no part in selecting those players or putting those teams together. Obviously he's a phenomenal coach. But Auerbach, meanwhile, was more than just a phenomenal coach; he knew how to recognise talent.

Irrespective of the number of teams in the League, Auerbach made some uncanny draft choices and trades, e.g. Havlicek, Russell (trade), McHale (trade), etc.

You don't think Phil Jackson had input into draft picks?

Also Red as GM lasted into the 80's. He drafted Bird a year before he came out of college, then orchestrated the McHale/Parish trade

The former.

Riley has shown he can coach an elite defense and offense (80's Lakers / 90's Knicks). Red Aurbach? Guy said it best: Phil Jackson is overrated.

I would normally go with phil/pop but I feel like they would butt heads too much. they have two totally different coaching philosaphies(sp?)

Riley/Pop and Red/Phil is a better comparison and im goin with riley pop on that one

Wow. This is like picking between Halle Berry or Jennifer Aniston. I would pick the Phil Jackson/Greg Pop combo. Pat and Red always seemed tight. Like they could not enjoy the moment. Phil's the kinda coach who enjoyed the moment. He would balance Pop's intense moments. With Riles and Red there would never be a down time and that is too much stress for me. I like the Jackson/Pop combo better.

I'd take the former. Popovich is a terrific coach (and I sound like a hater) but rings or not, he's not quite on the level of the other 3 (tho I could kill Pat Riley for letting Starks shoot so much).
