Default lakers turned down Beasley

Just reported by Chris Broussard on ESPN

The Minnesota Timberwolves offered to trade Michael Beasley to the Lakers for a first round draft pick, but the lakers turned them down.

Whats going on????

The word is that the lakers do not want to have to pay for his 6.2 million dollars, because it would be an additional 12.4 million to pay in the luxury tax.

When the lakers made the CP3 deal, it was because they were getting a superstar in return while saving 21 million in luxury tax over the next 3 seasons. The lakers are trying to remain competitive without going anymore over, what is already the highest payroll in the NBA.

Ask yourself this question, as an owner of a team, would you want to keep increasing in pay roll if the team isn't even a title contender?

On the other hand, we do have the TE, which seems to me like it is a) being saved for a point guard, or b) is received only to be expired, which sheds about 9 million dollars from the highest payroll in the NBA.

It is clear that the lakers want to shed some salary right now because of these new CBA rules which are going to kill all the big market teams.

You made great points esp saving the $ on a legit PG which is the biggest need but im not sure I like the idea of simply saving money for the sake of saving esp if the rumor about Buss getting a huge payday from Time Warner etc is true. I was bothered by the report/link I shared how they cleaned house, let go of their scouts without replacing most of them. There was also a separate piece where it said Mike Brown really wanted to get his old reliable assistant Mike Malone but was outbidded by Golden State Warriors.
I personally don't like Beasley but he is still an asset whom you can trade later on. For me, if it's obvious they won't get a legit PG, then try to get Beasley again. Dallas did this, collect goodd talent and use them as a trade bait if the need arises.

beasley isnt going to save our season i would rather them just wait and get a legit player later. these guys know its time to phase out the kobe era... like they did with shaq. onlymthis time we dont have another superstar. im hoping these guys are using their noodles and not just being penny pinchers, but u never know

How man years does mwp have left?
We should seriously amnesty the guy.

THEN, make the wolves take kapono +1st rounder for beasly.

THEN WE NEED to trade that 1st rounder for sessions.(using tpe. We already saving the tax on artest and got rid of kapono)

These small changes will help a LOT.

We still keep our big 3 AND ADD super cool bease+sessions and get rid of mwp+kapono.

Doesn't matter if we save the tax on Metta, you gotta have matching contracts to complete a trade. Plus you cannot amnesty someone halfway through the season.

The amnesty was a one time chance, which cannot happen again. If we waived artest, we couldn't claim him an amnesty cut, meaning we have to still pay his full salary AND the luxury tax to go along with it.

Kapono is making vets minimum, compared to beasley's 6.2, Meaning they lakers would still be paying well over 10 mill at least in luxury taxes.

Also, lastly, you cannot trade the TE in a package with something else. It is either you use the TE alone, or you don't use the TE, and then you can trade for sessions with players + picks. The TE for some reason cannot be used in a package unless it is by itself.

Its all an issue of $$$

Wasn't about what they were thinking of Beasley at all.

I do admit, for selfish reasons I wish they could have pursued Beasley, and taken that very good deal. But its an issue of money. They already pay more taxes than anyone else in the league, and they aren't even championship level lol. I understand your frustrations though.

If only there hadn't been bad contracts in the past. Then again they weren't always "bad" contracts. Walton had an amazing contract year, which we're still paying for....and I mean that in a bad way. Artest also had some great crucial moments which helped us win the championship.

You look at those guys and you remember these good times, but then you look at them now and you kinda wanna

Update:

Wolves wanted both first rounders, and did NOT want to take any salary in return from the lakers. According to John Ireland on AM 710. I wouldn't accept that deal either.
