I don't trust its historical accuracy, but JFK is a hell of a piece of filmmaking.
It kind of blew my mind the first time, I saw it, but then when you start to look at the its evidence, I don't trust its regard for the truth.
This is why trials have opposing sides, you can't just listen to the prosecutor or the defense. I don't think the defense lawyers get 7 minutes of screen time in JFK.
Also JFK absolutely kills when you play 6 Degrees of Kevin Bacon.
He may not be the best leading actor, but he's a guy just following his dreams and achieving success along the way. He doesn't come off as a jerk or asshole and he seems to have talent in multiple fields... He seems to understand what's really important in life. Can't really look down on a guy like that.
He was good in A Perfect World. Underrated Clint Eastwood directed film.
Open Range is a fantastic film.
As for A Perfect World - one of Clint's and Costner's best. You're right - criminally underrated. It took some time to digest originally, but great, great film.
good call. i'd completely forgotten about that movie. i *think* it was part of a trilogy of excellent robert duvall westerns, but i don't remember the other two right now.
TBH, i don't know if i've ever seen a bad costner movie or a movie in which he sucked. waterworld gets slammed a lot, but if you actually watched the movie it's not that bad of an adventure and it's at least intriguing for the flooded earth concept. we're getting closer to various scenerios like that, so it's actually got some relevance.
like someone was sort of pointing out above, costner is always SINCERE and sticks to his principles. almost the opposite of a hipster... opposite of cool. i think that might be the single biggest way in which he stands out from other leading men, although obviously that's going to be a turn-off for many in today's world.
JFK
Fields of Dreams
Untouchables
Dances With Wolves
A Perfect World
No Way Out
All of these movies are great. I never realized how many good ones Costner made.
Of course, he had a bunch of real stinkers after that run. The trio of Wyatt Earp, WaterWorld, and The Postman really killed his leading man status, and never really recovered.......
I think Costner had too much success too soon in his career. It caused him to think he could do nothing wrong, which lead to Water World, Wyatt Earp, and the Postman.
JFK is a great MOVIE. But in terms of 'historical accuracy,' well, it's non-existent. Horribly misleading.
But that's Oliver Stone. He makes movies, not history.
i can now verify this, having watched it last night. man that was an awesome movie. i have no idea where fact is overtaken by fiction (though a good guess might be when a character named Mr X is introduced lol) but either way, the last hour had me on the edge of my seat. i can also say that Costner was nothing but mediocre. he didn't ruin the movie, but nor did he carry it by any stretch of the imagination.
