Default Heat still struggling against Zone, Knicks can capitalize

We saw again, soon as Boston went to that zone, Bron and Wade went ICE-COLD, and they had to be bailed out by rookie Norris Cole.

Knicks picked up Tyson Chandler, the anchor of that Dallas zone that just really shut down the Heat. Gotta think if Knicks face Heat and implement a zone that is anchored by Chandler, they are able to get some stops down the stretch and have a chance at beating the Heat.

For me, today's Heat win was less impressive than the Knicks win on Christmas day.

amare needs to buy in On D tooo though....He needs to box out and help over on defense.

Umm.. when one player hits consecutive shots down the stretch to keep his team up or win his team the game.. he is pretty much BAILING his team out. Melo bailed out the Knicks too.. but you know Melo does that, can you rely on Norris Cole.. a rookie to keep on doing that?

You do realize zone is a type of defense right? Carmelo and amare don't seem to play that particular part of basketball well.

P.S. Wade has destroyed much better zone defences than the knicks could form.

Do the Knicks practice defense let alone a zone?

Actually the zone has more to do with your positioning and rotations on the court... and works more on TEAM defense, whereas man-to-man is more about an individual players defensive talents.

id expect the heat to have learned to beat a zone by the playoffs

. . . having said that. they should know how to beat one already.

Oh my god, Miami can't play zone. Might aswell just split this franchise up. After all, all you have to do is play zone defense against Miami and they're out.

If they play against it enough they'll figure it out. It's zone ffs, it's not exactly a difficult concept. Wade and Cole are both practically designed to break down zones.

Teams are better off throwing it in as a curveball instead of relying on it.

One of the benefits of a Zone is that if you have a solid anchor (Tyson Chandler) it can take away the defensive woes of the players around him. All you need is for your outer players be positioned correctly on the outside and you are effectively running a zone. It's not rocket science.

good man to man defenses actually rotate a lot more than zones do.

zones are good at covering up poor athletes on defense. guys who are smart, but not very quick, a zone can make them look good.

unfortunately for the knicks, melo and amare are athletic, just dumb defenders, so i dont think a zone would be a good idea.

melo and amare will get caught ball watching, and lose track of cutting players in a zone, much worse than they would in a man defense.

just my opinion though

At first I thought the thread title was ridiculous, but you're right they do have Chandler. Still though, good zones aren't easy to pull off, and they have diminishing returns.

I don't think a team that isn't that good defensively can just decide to switch things on the fly, but who knows, they may try to integrate it now. It's definitely a double edged sword though, and I would hope our dumbass coach gets them to figure it out by the playoffs.

"Knicks can capitalize"

Cs could pull it off since they have strong defensive principles. Knicks? Not so much.
