Default Are college rankings important?

When talking about academics and finding a job, are college rankings important at all? or is it honestly just about how well you do at the school and getting the degree and the school makes no difference?

Disregarding Ivy league schools, so don't factor in schools like Harvard, Princeton, etc.

depends on your expectations for yourself and career

going to a highly ranked and well connected school will certainly catapult you into career tracks that may otherwise not be available

but that's only for the very top, is there really a tangible difference between going to a top 60 school and top 75 school? nah I don't think so, u should pick the school based on fit, field of study, and location.

Well when I'm talking about rankings, I'm talking about the rankings of the field of study like top 50 business school vs. a business school that wasn't even ranked or something like that.

It depends on what you want to do. More prestigious jobs, a very well can make a difference.

At most work places, they won't know specific rankings, but they will know if the college is well known and respected.

Another thing to consider is that a good college near where you plan on living (if you have a specific end goal location) may give you the inside track on a job as well. For example, in Oregon if you went to an Oregon school and the employer is aware of the programs, that could help.

I think it all comes down to perception of the school or program whether it is ranked or not. If it comes down to a candidate from a school known for their business program versus a candidate from a school that the employer had never heard of, it certainly can make a difference. But you should hopefully find a job either way. Obviously a high ranked school is going to be more known in that field, so it can give you an edge in individual interviews, but ultimately you may end up with a good job either way.

Also, if the school is not ranked because it is truly no good at training their students, then it certainly makes a difference.

It certainly can be. I know several people who got their prestigious jobs due, in part, to their school. Its not the only thing to consider, but people do pay attention to them. For example, UofM has been a top anthropology PhD program for decades. Go look at any sizable anth program and at least one faculty will be from UM. It certainly plays a role.

It's the type of degree that really matters. If you get some worthless degree in art or something, you aren't going to get a very good job waving that around.

No...ivy league schools are not even that great in that regards. Penn State, Texas A&M, Arizona State are all better.

Sure there is a step down from those schools down to the next where you'll see a difference. Some schools are more highly recruited than others simply because they're better. Don't go to business school..waste of time.

if your school was ranked top 3 or top 5 for a particular field, you don't even need to ask this obvious question. you would now the answer already.

yea this is just not true. if you are interested in private industry, in particular finance, consulting, or good corporate gigs, going to a top school is almost a must. not a lot of penn state dudes at goldman

getting a good business job isn't about having a business degree. it's all about pedigree unfortunately, that's how hr screens resumes and recruits

Not really, but if you have a top tier school (Ivy League, Stanford, Northwestern or the likes) then people will take notice and you will get more interviews (people automatically assume you are better because you went to a school with a great reputation). When you get to the middle of the pack, like if you chose Wichita State over Southwest Louisiana State because it was 8 spots higher, no one is really going to notice. Also, if you went to a gimmicky school like Regent or something, people might take notice as well, but in a negative way.

Getting an MBA however is a different story. You need to be careful where you choose to go as all MBA are NOT created equally. Obviously Ivy League is good, but what is important is to check out where former alumni went on to work and see if those companies are of interest to you. Companies tend to prefer certain MBA programs.
