Default Mr. Casey

Stuck with a pretty bad team, what do Raps fans think of this guy?

I haven't been paying as much attention to the Raps lately as I used to(like back when they were the only team on TV here), so I wouldn't really know.

Does he have long-term potential as the head coach? What do you think of the plays he has set and his usage of the players? Better than those of the past?

You can get by in the NBA with a bad coach. You can't get by in the NBA with bad players. Casey is alright but in the long-run he doesn't mean much to the success of the team. It's all about getting the right talent on the floor.

It's a shame he's basically wasted a year of development for both Ed Davis and Bayless though.

Yeah I haven't heard anything of Davis since he has been drafted. I assumed he was a bust, but is he just not getting minutes?

Bayless I've heard mixed reviews on, and just read your thread of praise to him in this forum. What I've seen from him he's seemed like a capable back up.

Davis is averaging less minutes per game than he was last year. And this even includes a large stretch where Bargnani, the starting PF, was injured. It makes no sense in a year where everyone knew the Raptors were not going to be a playoff contender to not play Davis as much as possible.

Amir Johnson and Bargnani have pretty much both topped out. You're not going to see them get any better. Aaron Gray is a very low ceiling player. Jamaal Magloire is a total scrub. Ed Davis is the one player in the frontcourt who still has room for growth and the Raptors are doing a disservice to themselves as well by not seeing what they have in the guy. You're not going to get that chance next year with Valanciunas (a better prospect) coming over and both Amir and Bargnani likely still around.

Yeah that's a shame. I hope Davis gets more minutes. Never got to see much of him but seems like he has some potential.

I agree with what you said about the frontcourt. The Raps are in a spot where it can't hurt.

agree. davis should have been starting when bargs went down. maybe it would have been different if there was no lockout and ed could have worked with the organization in the off-season, had a full training camp, etc.

but still should have the opportunity to learn on the job this year.

It's so weird how Q always has so much belief in the team's shittiest players like Davis and Bayless. For being the Skip Bayless of this forum, it doesn't make sense why you have eternal support for these scrubs.

People act like he's getting 5 minutes a game. He still gets 23 minutes a game, down 2 from last year. If he can't show anything in those 23 minutes against the other teams' bench then I honestly don't expect what you expect from him against the starters in the league.

Listening to broadcasts from other teams, people love Ed Davis. They feel like he will have a long career in the NBA. Even Casey says he loves Ed Davis but there are flaws to his game overall and his focus isn't always there. Casey has said that they would like to rebuild Ed Davis' jump shot in the off-season.

What Q is trying to point out is that playing guys who have maximized their potential over a guy who is still learning the game in the rebuilding scenario doesn't make any sense. Even if he struggles, you let him play through. Get a real good idea of what the guy is made off. There is no reason Ed Davis shouldn't have been playing 36 minutes when Bargnani was off. Guys like Kleiza, Magloire, Gray don't deserve minutes at the expense of Davis in a rebuilding year.

Remember, NBA players need about 3 years to fully understand what you have in them. For some bigs, it can take up to 5 years, but that's about it. You know what you have in a player; I can't confidently say what type of Ed Davis can become. This year, I felt overall he has regressed. He is fumbling the ball a lot and his defense overall has gone down last year, too many lapses. But I still think you play him through that stuff.

Bayless is another guy; needs to play. Find out what he can give you in a starting role to see if he has a role with the team beyond this year. Calderon shouldn't have a future with this ball club. He's on the wrong side of 30 now...

I like Casey. Hard nosed and values a tough, defensive mentality. That's how you win championships. Which he has already done as an assistant last year under the tutoledge of Rich Carlisle.

Rick is an X's and O's type coach that always maximizes the talent of his teams consistently. I really wish we picked him up after Indy fired him.

Bingo.

I would never bet on Davis or Bayless becoming great players but what if? What is the downside to giving both of them 30 minutes per game and seeing what you have in them? I don't think Davis is building much trade value playing less minutes than his rookie year on a team with an already weak frontcourt. So him playing poorly isn't going to do much to his, likely, already non-existant trade value.

Calderon, Bargnani, Amir Johnson, Kleiza and Barbosa (for when he was around). All these players all well into their NBA careers and/or are past those typical "prime years" of 25-29 when it comes to an NBA player. At most, you'll see tiny improvements in their games and production and likely nothing at all. Starting Calderon over Bayless in that Knicks game before Bayless got injured was mind-boggling. It's some strange sense of respect to a player that won't even be part of your franchise in just over a year.

This is how the NBA works and that is what Calderon deserves. He didn't get that kind of respect for many seasons. And the club would be in a much better position now if he had been the undisputed starter over Ford and Jack.

Calderon has showed the kind of top 50 NBA player he is when healthy and all (including players development) would have worked better on the floor with him instead of those incompetent playmakers that Ford, Jack and Bayless are.
