Default Psychology Major

What's a good career in the psychology field? I'm switching my major to this. I took intro to psyc and barely passed because it was the quick one month session I over estimated it and slacked. But, I think it's a much better path to go rather than social science and humanities/liberal arts. I wanted to go for Social Worker but after researching I seen a lot of people complaining about it being low paying, stressful and a waste of time and effort. All 18 credits will transfer so I'll be fine in switching majors. I've been looking into careers for undergrads and salary's. I'm going to go for the BA and save up for the MA.

My wife has a BA in Psych, working on her MA. My brother just got his BA.

From everything that I've heard, don't plan on doing anything with your degree until you get your MA.

You should try to pick up a double major in undergrad to pair with Psych. It is a pretty normal major so having another skill to pair it with will help you differentiate yourself.

What does double majoring mean? I can't have financial aid so if it means more classes, etc, I wouldn't be able to.. & what job does your wife currently do? Do you mean that she can't find a good job in her specific area of interest? Can you please give me more specifics I'm really interested.

Well, at my school double majoring can usually be done by taking 18 credits per semester. The tuition covers 12-18 credits so picking up an extra class doesn't cost anything. It might be different where you go tho.

Go talk to a career advisor on campus if they have one. Ask them what % of the students who graduate from your school in your major get a job after graduation, what type of jobs and what their average salary is.

IMO, psychology is not something you do to get a job in. It's something you're interested in and should learn on your own time.

I just fully read your OP. Psych is just as low paying and a waste of time.

you pay per class where i go, but it's not a matter of taking more classes, just different classes if you want a double. in a typical psych major you'd get x number of electables that don't count towards your major, just towards your overall degree. so instead of filling up those free spots with shit like film or history or whatever you're into, you take only classes working towards your other major, which could well be film or history or econ or commerce or w/e

social work is low paying and very stressful but it is NOT a waste of time and effort in the slightest. if you're honestly interested in the career, you should check your rolodex for somebody actually involved in the biz and ask them about it. i'm quite certain they won't tell you they're wasting their time. loads of people lead more fulfilling lives because they spend their days dealing with and helping the less fortunate, humanizing them, becoming friends with them, and either as an afterthought or primary objective, feeling good about themselves as a result. that's nothing to sneeze at no matter what greenbacks above me may say.

then again if you have dreams of scrooge mcduck grandeur, prolly not the right path. depends what you want out of your career, apart from the bare necessities that are provided for across the board.

Unfortunately, we can't get out of the university core classes. A lot were great experiences tho so I can't complain.

that's a core set of classes for any given degree you mean? is that across the board at just about any american university you go to?

you get a lot more options in liberal arts, politics, psych, etc... the set courseloads are pretty much restricted to the hard sciences

Mhm I see, I'm going to try to find a decent paying job if I continue this major which I'm 99% I will, like what else is there to major in? I'm already 18-24 credits into it I might as well. I also like it, the reason why I got a D- was because I didn't put my head into the quick session and should of studied, never did. I won' fhuk around anymore though.

Yeah, we have requirements in certain categories for all students like faith and reasoning, arts, philosophy, creative writing, etc. I go to a private catholic uni tho so they kind of force us to take some theology courses this way. I'm not sure what the average american uni's set-up is like.

I think most are like this because a lot of kids use community college to get these type of core requirements filled for a discount.
