Default C-Webb update from ESPN. Looks to be Lakers...

Quote:
By Chris Sheridan
ESPN.com

Decision day almost certainly will be Monday for Chris Webber, whose agent told me Saturday night it'd be unwise to label any team -- whether the Pistons, Heat, Lakers or Mavericks -- a frontrunner.

Webber spent Saturday and planned to spend Sunday speaking and exchanging messages with players, coaches and executives from the four teams trying hardest to woo him.

Agent Aaron Goodwin said Webber had ruled out the Knicks -- although he might reconsider over the summer -- and was considering the Orlando Magic and Sacramento Kings only as fallback options. The four primary contenders were Detroit, Miami, the Lakers and Dallas.

"I would not use the word frontrunner," Goodwin said. "But I would say Detroit offers him everything he needs, and Joe [Dumars] has been very aggressive, very professional and very supportive in this process with Chris -- but so has Miami, and so has Dallas, and the Lakers aren't too far behind.

"If there is a negative with Dallas, it's that there isn't a lot of playing time going around. But with Detroit, he can embrace Detroit. And with Miami, who wouldn't want to play with Miami. Everybody knows that once they get healthy they'll fight back and contend for the championship just like they did last year," Goodwin said.

Goodwin said there was a remote chance Webber could make up his mind Sunday night, but a far greater likelihood was Monday.

Webber, who took a buyout from the Philadelphia 76ers last Wednesday, will not clear waivers until Tuesday morning.

"Why [decide] Monday? Well he hasn't played in a month, he's healthy and ready to go. So if he decides Monday, he can travel and get in place for his physical and have an opportunity to play in the next game, and that could be Tuesday night," Goodwin said.

It should be noted that of the four contending teams, only the Mavericks play Tuesday night (at home against Houston).

Goodwin said Webber had spoken with Pat Riley of the Heat, Dumars and coach Flip Saunders of the Pistons and general manager Mitch Kupchak of the Lakers (Webber and Kobe Bryant had exchanged messages), and had arranged to speak with Mavericks coach Avery Johnson.

"He hasn't made his mind up yet, and we made it a point today for him to talk with coaches and GMs himself, because they're the ones that can get him to understand what they would want from him," Goodwin said. "They can tell an agent anything."

So where will Webber wind up?

In what's only a guess, albeit an educated one, I rank the contenders thusly:

1. Lakers: It brings Webber back to the Western Conference in a glamour city with a glamour teammate, and it allows him to play in a system that, in theory, would suit his skills.

2. Detroit: A chance for Webber to reconnect with his hometown and possibly be a returning hero. It's always big to be something special to the folks back home.

3. Miami: Another glamour city with glamour teammates and even a glamour coach, but even Webber has to have a few doubts about whether another championship is truly possible.

4. Dallas: This is where Webber would actually have the best shot at a title, but we're not convinced that championship aspirations will end up being the determining factor in Webber's decision.

I think C-Webb is calling LA's bluff trying to get a guarantee to start. If we don't give him that, he'll go home to Detroit..

Latest from LA Times:

Quote:
Webber having his say in talks
Free-agent forward has spoken to Kupchak and was hoping to speak to Jackson this weekend.
By Steve Springer and Mike Bresnahan, Times Staff Writers
8:20 PM PST, January 13, 2007

Free-agent forward Chris Webber has become personally involved in talks with the Lakers about joining the club, according to his agent, Aaron Goodwin.

Webber spoke Saturday with Lakers General Manager Mitch Kupchak and was hoping to talk Saturday night to Coach Phil Jackson. Goodwin said he had talked Friday with Kupchak.

Playing time, not money, appears to be the issue for Webber with the Lakers, since two of the other four teams courting the 33-year-old power forward can offer him more money.

"If Phil can convince [Kupchak] to make a decision," Goodwin said, "maybe something can be done."

Goodwin couldn't resist taking a playful jab at Jackson, who had complained Friday night that Goodwin hadn't returned calls to the Lakers, playfully questioning why Goodwin didn't have more than one cell phone.

"Chris will be calling Phil on his cell phone," said Goodwin. "That is, if he has a cell phone. I guess he didn't know we had talked to Mitch several times [Friday]."

Webber was averaging more than 30 minutes a game with Philadelphia 76ers before they waived him on Thursday. When Lamar Odom (sprained knee) and Kwame Brown (sprained ankle) return to the lineup, probably by the end of the month, and with the effective play of Luke Walton, Jackson will already have his hands full trying to find minutes in the front court for Brian Cook, Vladimir Radmanovic and Ronny Turiaf, all of whom have had their moments of effectiveness.

Asked if Webber would be a starter if he signed with the Lakers, Jackson dodged the question Friday night.

"I think, if a player can contribute," Jackson said, "that's all he wants to know."

Webber, a five-time All-Star now in his 16th season, also has expressed interest in joining Detroit, Miami, Orlando and Dallas. The Heat has its full mid-level exception, worth about $5 million. The Magic has about half its mid-level exception. The Lakers, Pistons and Mavericks have all used their mid-level exceptions.

The Lakers could offer Webber a two-year contract worth about $2 million.

Monday is the first day Webber can formally sign with a team

Webber would fit good witht he Lakers but do we really want him?

I don't know...I personally have been sore about the guys since he left GS because he was scared of earthquakes. It's always something with him you know.

But we really could use him with all of our injurues ect. And his skills will be a good fit.

I have n idea if we could get him...and if you ask me I think it would be sweet for him to go back home to Detroit,

But hey...best of luck to him where ever he goes.

I just went to his resturant in Sac the other day Center Court. Pretty sweet place!

So San Antonio is out of the running? Just stay away from Dallas though. Avery is gonna tell him about how we play defense now and like to push the ball and get into our sets quickly and the only minutes we really have for him are Croshere's 5 or so minutes per and hopefully Webb just hangs up.

He's not going to be back in Sacramento but it'd help them a lot. If he could get something like 10 rebounds that would help the Kings in the rebounding department and he'd help out Ron's game. If Sacramento wants to win anything than they need to trade Miller and Bibby(who thinks he has the range of Kobe but really he just has the shot selection of Antoine Walker) no matter what. Chris would be a godsend though, and something to re-energize Arco. Too bad it won't happen, right about now it's a match made in heaven for Sacto. Maloofs really should've tried harder to sign Webber. But like I've just said, it won't happen because you know that one of Detroit, LA, Miami, or Dallas will nab him.

Look. If he wants to go to the Eastern Conference, then let him go to the Eastern Conference. Who cares??? It's not like we're in desperate need of him. Chris Webber, no matter what he says, probably never had any intention of going to the Los Angeles Lakers no matter what he says. It's like a not so popular kid with all types of potential saying that he's probably going to hang out with the coolest kid in school just to make himself look good even though he had no intention of hanging out with him.

This is pure speculation on ESPN's (Entertainment & Sporting Networks's) part. There is no new story. There is no new developing story. They're just telling you the same story in a different way.

Wasn't that what people were saying about Karl Malone??? He probably wouldn't do it for the sake of the restaurant he just opened. There are still some Sacramento Kings who actually believe that they're still rivals against the Los Angeles Lakers. Everybody has heard the stories of mariodeathgrip!!! and how people in Sacramento discriminate against his wife and children for being Los Angeles Lakers fans.

This won't be good for his restaurant.

This system would suit his skills, if he was the same player from his Sacramento Kings days.
2. Detroit: A chance for Webber to reconnect with his hometown and possibly be a returning hero. It's always big to be something special to the folks back home.
This is probably the only obvious reason that would make sense for Chris Webber.
3. Miami: Another glamour city with glamour teammates and even a glamour coach, but even Webber has to have a few doubts about whether another championship is truly possible.
Are you serious??? But, it's a glamour city, with, with, with glamour teammates, and even a glamour coach; where the training coach uses Brazilian massage oil, the towel boy soaks the towels in Vicks Vaporub.; where the groupies are full of...glamour and he still has doubts??? Oh the glamour!!!

You think Chris Webber is staying up and caring about glamour??? No, he probably wants one thing...a championship.
4. Dallas: This is where Webber would actually have the best shot at a title, but we're not convinced that championship aspirations will end up being the determining factor in Webber's decision.
They're not convinced that championship aspirations will end up being the determining factor in Chris Webber's decision??? Then what is the determining factor??? Money??? The guy has millions of dollars. He was so close to the National Basketball Association Finals a while back. He almost tasted it. He wants that taste and that feeling back. After all the injuries he's had, he could've retired comfortably, so a championship might just be one of the determining factors in Chris Webber's decision.

ESPN (Entertainment & Sporting Network) hasn't really said anything new regarding this whole situation. ESPN (Entertainment & Sporting Network) is telling everybody the same story in a different way.

This whole Chris Webber thing reminds me of the Carlos Boozer fiasco years back.

Webber on the Lakers just makes sense. Playing time, perfect system, sidekick to Kobe and LA still has the resources in the front court to cover for CWebb if hes not feeling up to snuff. Plus, it gives them a nice well rounded roster.

Miami would be cool too. But mainly I just wanna see Shaq and Webber paired up together.
