unless extra terrestrial lifeforms (should they exist) have found a way to travel at the speed of light, nobody's coming here on time before we all become extinct or kill ourselves.
There's definitely extra terrestrial lifeforms out there. The universe is just so vast, its impossible that earth is the only planet capable of supporting life, and its human arrogance to claim that we are the apex of intelligence. Look how far our technology has advanced in the last 500 years. I would be very surprised if we are the height of knowledge and technology in the universe.
I think the severity of this breaking news depends on what kind of chairs we're sitting it
I think the OP was born in West Virginia, raised in Arkansas and now working at his pop's gas station in Kentucky somewhere, basically. In time the aliens will get us. They're not yet finished giggling and watching us on their "cable television"
I'd be very very surprised if the earth has the only life in the universe, but I wouldn't be nearly as surprised if we're one of the very few planets with life that can use information to build pieces of technology, or if we're the first to do so. Not exactly likely, but completely possible. Remember, this sort of thing isn't even really about intelligence. There are animals out there that have similar brain power as humans, but how it is divided up, and stuff like being able to use tools isn't related to brain power much, but is vital to being able to build technology.
you also have to remember that to get to the point we are now it took us 3.4 billion years after first life appeared, and 4.5 billion years after the earth formed. that is a fifth to a third of the entire universes existence. even if life has arisen elsewhere and even if it was before us it still might be billions of years behind us developmentally.
also i'm not sure how long after the universe started that life could have theoretically began, but it would have to be after the first generation(s) of stars died out so that heavy elements could be formed. that is at least a billion or so years in, so we very well could be the most technologically advanced species right now.
The UN has a committee that plans against alien attacks (including giant monster attacks). I'm not kidding. They draw up plans, which countries would give forces, what to do if the attack was concentrated in one country, etc.
I so want to be on that committee. They must sit, smoke weed, watch Godzilla films and chill.
