30M euros is a lot of money, too much for him imo, but Javi Garcia is already their best DMF.

Due to frailty and a lack of fitness he rarely reaches that level of play these days though.

TH is capitulating by replacing Modric and VdV with Moutinho and Dembele imo. They are done as one of the new powers in English football.

He's been at Barça since he was 12 or 13 and he's been through all their youth setup. You could call Messi a homegrown talent.

Not to nitpick, but Messi joined Barcelona at age 13, so he is homegrown talent in the sense that they made him the player he is.

They went out and bought him and brought him in and groomed him. That is something you can only do if you have a lot of resources. This is more like the Yankees bragging their farm system produces such talent when they spend 200 times more on scouting and paying young picks.

Props to them for doing it but it's not small market behavior. It's winning behavior though no doubt. HOWEVER, a Barca fan taking veiled shots over transfer spending is ridiculous, if Barca needed a new A List striker, they'd get one guaranteed. That whole team is sick.

I've hardly seen that Van der Vaart since his Ajax days. He's shown glimpses here and there afterwards, but to me he's mostly a case of unrealized potential. Moutinho is a poor's man Xavi, and an outstanding player in his own right. He hasn't gotten much exposure yet, but he's 25 and getting better every season. I don't think the EPL is a good fit for him, though. We will see.

Anyway that's neither here nor there, every other post alenleomessi makes is going to take a shot at some team he feels is a Barca enemy. I was hoping to see Man City and Barca in the same group so he'd explain how much Man City sucks.

This transfer market stuff is fun, i wish i knew the players better. (I also wish the new FIFA was out, my rosters are terribly out of date.)

You don't have to sell me on Messi, you'd need to be blind and/or stupid not to see his talent (although somehow you don't see Ronaldo's talent...hmmm...)

Well, that's the way football works. Big clubs have the scouting and resources to harvest the world's best talent at a young age. They've all been doing it for a long time, and they will keep on doing so.

How does this all work? Teams don't let players get to FA, so you need to pay a fee? Is the fee a set one in the contract? Agreed upon on time of transfer? How does the player have leverage? It all seems like a huge free for all.

Like when Chelsea got Torres, was he being a problem and asking out? Did Chelsea just offer too much to ignore? Was Liverpool under any pressure to release him? Was his contract up soon?

It's all very confusing looking in from outside.

Some countries (Spain, Portugal, Italy too, I think) usually add a release clause to the contracts of their players. If you match it, the player can be released from his current team and signed by the buyer at any time during his contract. This is often used as cautionary measure (setting astronomical release clauses) to avoid their best players being tempted by other teams. Other countries, like England, don't have such clause, so a player can only be acquired by an agreement with his current team. Also, it is theoretically illegal to negotiate directly with a player under contract unless he's in the final 6 months of his contract, but teams do it all the time under the table. Star players usually get to have the final word on a transfer.

It's stupid to generalize a whole countries players or whole race of players. It just is.
