As indicated by the general consensus, it appears we've seen Dwight play his last game in a Magic uniform. With free agency approaching, Jameer Nelson has opted to forego his player option and test the open market (source
)... and who can really blame him? With Dwight jumping ship, the situation in Orlando will only get worse before it gets better.
Where does Jameer Nelson end up playing next season? Despite making just shy of $8 million a season the past two years, he's never been much of a stand-out at his position... and has drawn the ire of more than a few of the Magic faithful in his time. During that bizarre logjam period in Orlando, where they seemed to have at least 4-5 PG's on the books (Nelson, Duhon, J. Williams, Arenas), it's debatable if he was even the best PG available to start.
Even so, he could be a quality starter elsewhere in the league. Maybe even a backup if he's willing to accept a reserve role for the first time in years, in exchange for the opportunity to contend again.
* Former All-Star (2009)...
* 12 PPG/5 APG/3 RPG career average...
* 12 PPG/7 APG/3 RPG this past season...
It seems clear that where Nelson signs will be determined once Deron Williams, Steve Nash and (to a lesser degree) guys like Goran Dragic sign with their respective teams. If Nash decides to sign elsewhere, I can almost certainly see the Suns
bringing Nelson on board for a nice chunk of change. He'll have an opportunity to start, and Phoenix could do a hell of a lot worse when choosing a starting PG for their post-Nash rebuild.
If Dallas loses out on D-Will and Kidd skips town, the Mavericks
could be a potential option. Nelson/West (resign)/Beaubois is a decent PG rotation.
