The Raptors and restricted free agent Landry Fields have agreed to a three-year offer sheet, as first reported on twitter by ESPN’s Marc Stein, that “approaches $20 million.”
Stein also tweeted that the third year of the deal would likely see a spike in salary, similar to the offer sheet Omer Asik agreed to with the Rockets.
Nothing can be signed until July 11, but once the paperwork is complete next Wednesday, the Knicks will have three days to match Toronto’s offer.
Fields just turned 24-years-old last week and has had a solid yet unspectacular start to his career in two seasons with the Knicks as a “glue-guy” kind of wing player. He’s yet to miss a game in his two-year career and has averaged 11.2 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.3 steals adjusted per 36 minutes in 148 games.
I, like others, like Fields as a player but not for this kind of money. Is he really anything more than an average starter at best? This further shows the management's lack of confidence in Derozan and that Ross may not be anything great either.
Oh I think I've figured it out. What is Fields' best attribute? His rebounding. Why would you ever care if your SG is a good rebounder? That's like having a PF who plays on the perimeter and doesn't rebound or playing interior defense and the team is desperately trying to compensate for such a flawed player. Wait a minute...
He's basically the 3rd backup SG on the team now. The Raptors have 3 backup SGs (Derozan, Ross, Fields if he signs) and 2 backup SFs (Johnson, Kleiza).
It would be great if they could start going after some starting-caliber players on the wing.
I believe it's his ability to block the Knicks in a Nash S&T, actually.
Bingo.
I don't know how anyone can think Fields is worth anywhere near this kind of money. IMO he is James Johnson except not as good of a one on one defender.
I don't even know if I'd consider Fields a better player in general than James Johnson.
I can't believe what is happening this offseason. All the excitement I have for seeing Valanciunas next year is getting crushed by the low-risk low-ceiling draft picks and these free agency rumours.
The f*ck is BC thinking? 3 years 20 mill for a glorified 6th man? Come on now. Just when I give the man some credit he goes and does some stupid shit like that. If we're gonna go "all in" on a wing player, why didn't we go after someone like Jason Terry? He's about to go to the Celtics with a 3 year 15 mill.
