Default Bulls send Korver to Hawks

Chicago Tribune:

The Bulls completed the trade of Kyle Korver to the Hawks reported last Friday, however the Timberwolves dropped out of the thoroughly discussed three-team deal.

Korver's $5 million contract becomes guaranteed for the 2012-13 season and slides into the Hawks' trade exception created when they dealt Joe Johnson to the Nets. The Bulls received a $5 million trade exception and cash.

That cash was originally headed to the Timberwolves, who were going to send a second-round pick to the Bulls, a source said. A trade exception allows the Bulls to acquire a player whose contract is up to $5 million without sending out any salary. They expire after a year if unused.

It's too bad we weren't able to get a pick out of the deal. This puts us at almost $63.5 million right now - Hinrich and Omer will add to it depending on who we sign/match. If they can find a way to get rid of Hamilton they can match the offer sheet on Omer and still have room to fill out the rest of the roster with minimum contracts without going over the tax threshold. Figure out a way to get it done GarPax!

If we're at 63.5 + 5 for Asik (if we match) + 3 for Hinrich

that'll be over 70 million. Isn't 70 the luxury tax threshold?

You are correct. I was assuming they were able to get rid of Hamilton, which would take us down to $58.5 million before Omer and Kirk.

It'd be nice to be able to drop RIP for cheaper and/or younger options, but there doesn't seem to be any teams out there that are interested and I can't think of any teams that would make sense for him either.

RIP would help us remain competitive though as he can still play as long as he stays healthy.

I'd be ok with keeping him, but if we could replace him for someone like Courtney Lee or a few other options and save the money at the same time I'd be all for it.
